Review of Gidget

Gidget (1959)
6/10
A Surfette Of Sun And Sand
6 July 2022
Sandra Dee stars as the fresh-faced, virginal Francie Lawrence aka Gidget. And no one could be better suited to the role. Gidget has not yet discovered boys, but her friends are boy crazy. When they go to the local beach for a "manhunt", Gidget grudgingly goes along, but she is oblivious to the ways of romance or sex. And she is content to focus on swimming.

Then she discovers surfing. She is mad to learn surfing skills, so she buys a board and bugs the boys until they teach her. And in the process, she discovers romance.

This film is pure entertainment. Unlike "Where the Boys Are", it makes no social statements. The young cast is very entertaining, even in the clichéd ways it is portrayed.

Though Francie finds love, there is little romance in this story. And the development of the film's characters is very uneven, so it feels unrealistic. Still, it is difficult not to love the irrepressible Gidget.
