Review of Macbeth

Macbeth (II) (2011)
8/10
Excellent early Verdi

I admit Macbeth has never been one of my favourite Shakespeare plays; too much blood and too short to be a major tragedy. This production is a wonderful compromise between traditional and contemporary staging: I never said Ugh! To myself when looking at sets and costumes. Keenlyside seems very much at home in the role, wish I could say the same about Monastyrska who's a little wooden, but sings well. The chorus delivers the big number O Patria oppresa with less power than I anticipated. All in all, a good show.
