You Really Can't Go Wrong

Rodney Dangerfield plays a libertine children's photographer with two daughters and a rich mother-in-law who hates his guts. You can't go wrong.

The first half of the movie is about how his daughter is marrying some Latino guy and he's not comfortable with it. The second half is about a deal where he has to give up his debauched lifestyle in order to make big money.

The plot sounds interesting at first blush, but if it didn't have Rodney Dangerfield, it would probably be very standard. The characters are more or less cartoonish. The wife is a saintly understanding wife who lives the Rodney character no matter what he does and really doesn't want him to change. The son-in-law and his sidekick are a little bit humorous but mostly just bumbling fool archetypes. The villain isn't very evil and doesn't go to great lengths to try to sabotage Rodney for his own gain. Additionally to be frank, they don't do all they could with Rodney all throughout the movie.

Nevertheless, his trademark one-liners only creep in in the second half of the film and save the day. Not as strong as Back to School (1986), but like most Dangerfield movies, a gem.

Honourable Mentions: Trading Places (1983). Neat little country mouse/city mouse getup where Eddy Murphy is given a high social position and wealth as an experiment by bored rich people, much like this movie.
