Melodrama in tights
30 August 2022
ASHES OF VENGEANCE is a handsome historical production, no doubt inspired by the success of contemporary period pictures like Fairbanks' ROBIN HOOD and WHEN KNIGHTHOOD WAS IN FLOWER with Marion Davies. Unfortunately, the script is pretty routine, a standard melodrama about a pair of lovers from rival houses who have to work together to stop a wicked nobleman. I did like how in charge Norma Talmadge's character was-- rather than a fainting damsel, she actually takes command and shows plenty of backbone when menaced. It's a little overlong and, like I said, predictable, but silent film fans like me will likely enjoy it, even if it isn't a classic.
