What's so great about Gabin?
12 October 2022
Is it because he's French? Is it because he's swarthy yet sensitive? Is it because he seems like the type to aggressively pin you against the wall and then make the most tenderest of love to you? I don't know.

What I do know is that Thomas Mitchell shines in this one. You can't go wrong with Lupino. Rains makes the most of as meatless a role as he can. Sadly, Gabin does not strike me as a Hollywood lead.

I think what intrigues me most about this film is the set design. While the juxtaposition between soundstage and screen backdrop is prominent, it somehow melds into a pleasing experience of production design. And there's a reason the cinematographer was Oscar-nominated.

Recommended for diehard fans of 1940s cinema.
