The title song drove me nuts
17 November 2022
If you are still tempted to watch this movie, be warned that you will hear the title song over and over and over, performed in every conceivable (and inconceivable) way. If you think Ernest Gold overused "Waltzing Matilda" in "On the Beach," you ain't heard nothin' yet.

The plot? Walter Huston plays a prison inmate - he conducts the prison orchestra. Guess what they play? Kay Francis plays his ex-wife, who is about to marry Sidney Blackmer (apparently, Ms. Francis' eyes and wits are failing). Ms. Francis does not know that Huston is about to be paroled. Huston's daughter (Gloria Warren) is an aspiring singer. Guess what she sings? Inexplicably, Borrah Minevitch and his Harmonica Rascals make an appearance. Guess what they blow into their instruments? Johnny Puleo, who later achieved harmonica fame on his own, plays the vertically challenged member of the Rascals.

Repeat after me: You are always in my heart You are driving me insane

You will need intensive therapy to get this tune out of your head. Or else, try to replace it with "You Light Up My Life."

The title song received an Oscar nomination. Ninety minutes of musical torture. Enjoy.
