This comedy series is about Ann Marie, a young single woman living in New York City. While working at a variety of jobs to support herself, she attempts to establish herself as an actress. The quirkiness of Ann's personality is nicely balanced with the humor of her boyfriend, Donald Hollinger. Frequently, Ann's independence is challenged by her well-meaning but overprotective father, Lew Marie. Although Ann's efforts to advance her acting career are occasionally met with setbacks, Ann is undaunted and continues to pursue her dreams.

For modern audiences, it is easy to overlook how ground-breaking a television series about a young independent single woman actually was at the time of its original broadcast. While watching episodes of this series, modern viewers become immediately aware of how much American society has changed since the time of this series. Gender roles have changed greatly; and, opportunities for women have increased.

Overall, the series provides audiences very warm and enjoyable viewing experience. The characters are very charming and likeable. The series also provides modern audiences with a fascinating look at life during the late1960s and early 1970s. A lot of things have changed since the days when a pack of gum cost only five cents! For those who were actually around during the 1960s, the series also provides a very nostalgic glimpse of a simpler (even if imperfect) time.
