Mystery Date (1991)

Problematic, but Entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is cringe from the first frame to the last! About a boy who likes a girl, and shows it by stealing her trash, spying on her through binoculars in her most private moments, and using that information to seduce her into a date. And, spoiler alert, even after learning he's not who he says he is, she stays with him cuz he said something funny and special at the end of the night. 🙄. That being said, there's still some really fun moments and the movie turns into a murder mystery pretty early, which saves it a little from the heinous way it starts. Ethan Hawke does his best Tom Cruise impersonation and spends most of the movie stumbling nervously through lies. Teri Polo remains pretty clueless through the entirety of the date, which is unbelievable and frustrating. B. D. Wong is also terribly miscast and does the strangest gangster character I think I've ever seen. Very enjoyable movie, but incredibly problematic! I really wanna see Jaime French do a review of this one!
