Forever Knight (1992–1996)
10/10
Vampires with Family Values

I always enjoy watching this show. Nick Knight (Geraint Wyn Davies) is the vampire / police detective who does not want to hurt anyone, and he wants to recover his mortal life.

His supporting characters are played by the gorgeous and classy Deborah Duchene as Janette, a fellow vampire. She is always watching out for Nick, and tries to give him good advice. She lived with Nick as his vampire wife for 97 years, and left him because she was bored (her words, not mine).

Nigel Benett plays the master vampire, Lucien Lacroix. He brought Janette over first and later Nicholas. He is always talking about family, and he actually seems to be a decent guy most of the time. On other occasions he creates trouble and pain for Nick, because he wants Nick to recognize him as the master, and a father figure. It is a dysfunctional family, but you see that they are all sincerely trying to do the right thing (but often in the wrong ways).

Catherine Disher plays Dr. Natalie Lambert, the coroner. She spends a lot of time fixing Nick when he gets injured, and engaging in microbial research of Nick's vampire biology. It is unlikely that a county coroner would have such scientific equipment in a coroner's office.

John Kapelos played Schanke (pronouced Skanky), the detective partner to Knight. He was a pretty annoying character who was always making sarcastic remarks, and falling down during chases. Kapelos was usually portrayed as inept and incompetent. Sometimes he solved the case, and a few times Nick allowed him to think he had. I often fast-forward when he starts talking.

After two seasons, Kapelos was replaced by Lisa Ryder. She was a bit stiff as an actress, but a lot better than Kapelos. Later on, Ryder was on Gene Roddenberry's Adromeda and Jason X.

Gary Farmer played the police captain during season one, and he was very thoughtful and had a lot of compassion for people. He was replaced by Natsuko Ohama in season two. She had a very cold and unfriendly personality. She was replaced by Blu Mankuma in the final season. Mankuma played the standard police captain on most police TV shows.

The last season added Ben Bass as Vachon, a vampire who helped out Nick. Vachon was almost the same character as Knight, but with less rules and sexier. It almost seemed like there were two versions of Nick Knight in season 3.

Overall, it seems like every season the writers were trying to make the show different in some way. Perhaps the goal was attracting higher ratings. Unfortunately, Forever Knight was canceled after season 3.

The show had a lot of thoughtful stories about morality, ethics, family values, and questions about good versus evil. It was entertaining without being gory. You got vampire action without too much blood. Unlike other vampire shows, I have watched the DVD set many times, about once a year. I wish there had been a couple more seasons.
