Halo Infinite's Open World Disappoints
19 February 2023
Halo Infinite takes a new direction and offers players an open-world experience for the first time. However, those who follow the relatively short story will quickly realize that the open world is made up of several small areas, eventually leading to a linear area in the last few hours of gameplay that cannot be left, feeling like previous Halo games. The open world seems like a means to an end rather than something the game truly required. Additionally, the small open world suffers from various issues, like many other games. The world is empty, and there are no interesting points that invite exploration, leading to the typical and dull task of completing points on the map. Unfortunately, the story is also not particularly exciting and did not necessitate an open world. Perhaps something better could have been created if the goal was not an open-world game. Nonetheless, the gameplay, which is the biggest strength of the Halo series, is incredibly enjoyable, and the game deserves credit for the fact that I had fun playing it for 15-20 hours. After Halo Guardians, it represents a significant step forward, but the series has delivered much better in the past decades.
