Much more enjoyable than usual
14 March 2023
Though this is not a hidden gem, I really enjoyed it, enough to take the time to comment. There is still a lot of "plot", not all of which is readily understandable, but the story sets up a number of interesting touches. Such as a lot of canoeing rather than merely horse chases. There is even a canoe chase! And a lot of jumping into streams, sometimes on horseback. There is a deserted cabin which is eerie of not explainable other than as needed for the plot. Most of the film is set in Canada, so we have Mounties rather than Rangers, and nefarious Frenchmen as the villains rather than Mexicans.

Of necessity, there are a couple of females, but thankfully not much time is devoted to romance. All of this is packed in a one-hour film. It was not art, but it was never boring, and much more enjoyable than I'd expected. As an extra bonus, John Wayne does not sing.
