Linoleum (2022)
4/10
It could have been anything, it chose to be boring

This film could have been so much more than it ultimately turned out to be.

To be fair, the marketing for this film got me. I like Jim Gaffigan as a standup comedian and this film was marketed as sci-fi, which I love, so I thought this had to be good, right? Well...

Sort of? It's not the worst film I've seen, by far, but it's absolutely nothing as original as it pretends to be. I mean, in the end it's basically got the plot of "The Notebook", and that's pretty inexcusable to me (lol).

I thought Jim and Katelyn Nacon did commendable acting work in this film. Everyone else was okay.

And I'll also give it to this film, it tries to play its hand very close to the chest with 19 minutes left to go, but there's a few clues (the very elderly man and woman) that pointed me towards "the truth" about 1/2 into it, and I let out an audible sigh as it was confirmed at that 19 minute mark.

This film could have been something really cool and weird...and then it just wasn't. It tells a nice story (sort of) that has been told before. Not as unique as it thinks it is.

Side note, I personally believe there is a place for mind stuff / the film depiction of mental illness and disease on the screen, but when classifying a film as a sci-fi genre film, it's actually somewhat insulting and definitely misleading to call a film that is ultimately about someone with dementia a "sci-fi film".
