Review of Radio On

Radio On (1979)
7/10
A late 1970's grey British journey

I rather liked this! The more I think about it - the more Radio On grows on me.

Being from Bristol myself and now having lived in West London since the late '80s - I have made the journey between the cities countless times. So, Radio On has personal resonance.

This is a road movie, and by now a time capsule for not just Britain in the late 1970s - but also how road movies were made then. This is 45 years ago and we do things differently now. So - no use to read the other reviewers here who don't like or don't get the film.

Watching Radio On helps me to remember who I was and where I was in 1979. 21-years-old and like every other 21-year-old - on a journey. I didn't know I was, but I was.

No surprises at all that Wim Wenders and his cameraman Martin Schäfer were involved here. Like his great films, the story behind Radio On goes beyond the search and the journey.

Radio On is not as good as Kings of the Road or Alice in the Cities. Not by a measure, but it's still an engaging film.

The traveler (Beames) sets off on a low-key trip along the route from London to Bristol. He strays off the motorway and encounters several interesting characters and situations.

Nicely filmed in atmospheric black & white, with honest no-frills acting, Radio On also has a good verging on great soundtrack.

Sometimes we find things along the journey - sometimes we don't. But we have still made the journey.
