Lackluster and Amateurish
12 May 2023
Why Bogart ever agreed to do this will always puzzle me. Most of the movie seems like something a high school drama club would put together except the high school actors would do a better job than most of the cast in this film. The criminal "gang" is so lame, tame, and amateurish that it's laughable, especially John Derek as "Pretty Boy" Romano. (Pretty Boy Floyd he ain't.) I can see why Derek's acting career never took off and why his main claim to fame was collecting and controlling beautiful wives who all looked alike. The rest of the cast, such as they are, is either hammy (like the actor playing the District Attorney) or forgettable and I was embarrassed for all of them. This will never be considered one of Bogart's better films and it's easy to see why after watching this mediocre, miscast mess. Reruns of Perry Mason would be more watchable and well done than this movie.
