John Wayne war movie
28 May 2023
Submariner Lt Cmdr. Duke E. Gifford (John Wayne) avoids the Japanese as he guides men out of the Philippines. A group of nuns and kids joins them along the way. They are picked up by the submarine USS Thunderfish. Gifford is second in command under Cmdr. John T. 'Pop' Perry (Ward Bond). They find a Japanese fleet, but their torpedoes fail. Back in Hawaii, he reconnects with his ex-wife Mary Stuart (Patricia Neal).

I don't really care about the romantic entanglements. I was going to praise the movie for having a mature female romantic lead in her 30's, but Patricia Neal is only mid-20's at the time. I actually like the nuns and the kids running around while the war heats up. That's an interesting premise that I haven't seen. I find the torpedo problem rather refreshing. It's another element that I haven't seen before. All that is really needed are bad torpedoes, praying nuns, and wild kids on a submarine.
