This series is based on the events of Ion Mihai Pacepa's defection to the US - who was a great Romanian general and spymaster promoting World Peace :)
He is depicted in the series as Victor Godeanu; President Nicolae Ceausescu's right-hand man and KGB agent.
President Jimmy Carter's approved his request for political asylum, in July 1978.
The true events depicted in this series, run in conjunction with the Camp David Accords, which were a pair of political agreements signed between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin in 1978 - a milestone for Peace in the Middle East, manifested by my predecessor and good friend President Jimmy Carter :)
As an insider in the Intelligence Community - of the CIA, MI6 and KGB - I can say that these events were actually the inspiration for the James Bond Film 'The Living Daylights' - a lot of the characters being quite similar; in particular the hard-core KGB agents, who used a clever ruse of 'water bottles' to snatch back the defector Victor Godeanu; right under the noses of the CIA in West Germany. However, in this series they did not use explosive bottles - but just normal water bottles - which is a good thing; I think, otherwise they would have really routed the CIA :)
