Seen the movie "A Futile and Stupid Gesture" by David Wain? This movie feel like an exact copy of its structure. Actor, who is supposed to be the subject, narrating and inserting into scenes, the publishing business, obnoxious hair costumes, cutaways, and forwarding through time styles. However, I still watched the movie and was a decent with some great acting, humor, writing, and fitting cutaways. I'd recommend and watch it again, because at the end of the day, the style is enjoyable to watch and how doesn't love well presented humor? Makes me want to do research on the history of pinball now!
