Mental illness in the monarchy, what else is new?
31 July 2023
I have really enjoyed the Shondaland take on the beloved series of books by Julia Quinn around the Bridgerton family, but I felt this off shoot was kind of unnecessary. I am not sure it really added anything to the overall story...and I am not sure what was even intended? Was Charlotte to gain sympathy? We already know the characters and their stories, it isn't a revelation to us the King George suffers from a mental illness and it has already been revealed in the main story that Charlotte and George love each other...and that she is lonely.

The one question I do have after watching this is where have George and Charlotte's thirteen children been hanging out this whole time? I don't remember hearing of them or seeing them in the first two seasons of Bridgerton.

That aside, the actress India Amarteifio who plays the young Queen Charlotte is lovely and has a commanding presence as well as great chemistry with Corey Mylchreest, the actor playing young King George. I enjoyed the moments that they shared and the banter between them, even though they were few and far between.

This was not as upbeat or, I am afraid, as romantic as the main Bridgerton series. I am sorry to say that I do think you can skip it if you are a Bridgerton fan and/or a fan of romance. (Sorry, but I highly recommend Bridgerton itself.)
