Can't believe no one ever reviewed this one, where to begin...
Well to our modern standards CGI and practical effects are, well a bit dated (like by a lot) but if this is intended for a kid of 13-15 that would not matter (hopefully). I have strong nostalgic feelings as in my childhood this was one of the rarest cases where a princess saves the day (and her prince/kingdom in later movies), it is a fun and kind Italian folklore story that is full of overly dramatic villains and quirky characters.
This first movie follows the coming of age of the main protagonist and her plight to save her kingdom from the devastating war that was begun by her forthfathers. It's a fun family adventure feature with future films that expand the story and characters.
