The Man In The White Suit (1951) : Brief Review -

A sci-fi British Satire that challenges the norms of industrialization and capitalization colliding with human conscience. Alexander Mackendrick's British comedy is apparently a fun film, but there are some serious pointers to its classy screenplay. The story can be kept aside by saying it's a satire, a social drama, and a sci-fi-corporate drama, but its screenplay takes it to a whole new level. It's a common, intelligent man against the system of industrial business, but then he is put against his own people too. That's what makes it more interesting and clever. The man has to go against his own people for his invention, which he made to make their lives easier, but he couldn't realise that it might be bad for society and especially labourers in some other way. Well, it's a universal subject, in my opinion, and it's very mystical too, because we can't really take one side with full faith. As an educated person, you can take the side of science, but it may turn against the lower-class and middle-class people of society. So you can't go with that since these two classes consist of a major section of society in any part of the world. Alec Guiness plays a naive scientist who isn't exposed to capitalization and socialisation, but he has a great sense of responsibility and human conscience. The great actor has done a great job yet again! I don't know how they were convinced to go ahead with Joan Greenwood's accent, but I liked that too. The other cast members have been fantastic as well. The writers deserve more credit than anybody else here. But I am happy that director Alexander was one of the writers too. So, I'd like to give him the most credit for this close-to-gem piece of satirical cinema that stands tall against the test of time. I'm sure such a smart satire would have been called a classic here in Bollywood at any time.
