Review of Dirt

Dirt (2007–2008)
6/10
Recovered from a terrible first episode, on both seasons.

Warning: Spoilers
It always surprises me how good both seasons got, after their lousy first episodes. Season 1 was dark and gritty, with outstanding acting in certain scenes. Then season 2 kickstarted killing off one of its best characters, and lost its edge, with a lighter tone and a cartoon version of Lucy Spiller. That looked more like « bad » Monica Geller, than the « new and improved » Gail Weathers she was in season one. I know, Cox is more than that, but her character in this show is so similar to those two, it's crazy. And partly why I love it so much, and never really got into her other roles, following the series. To be perfectly clear, I get why FX decided to pull the plug on the show. The characters were awful, and the Paris, Nicole, Lindsay, Britney of « Dirt/Now », were not memorable. But I'm sure keeping them around a little more would've paid off. Willa's ambition was at its peak in the last episode, and hinted at very interesting storylines regarding her ambiguous relationship with her mentor. Lucy and Holt romance and Don's new situation, were things I was anticipating as well. Unfortunately, they never got to show what writers had planned to do with those last minutes plots, and the series ended, halfway through the first half of season two... Who knows, maybe Dirt might have become the female « Nip/Tuck », and would've lasted one or two more seasons. With trashier stories each weeks, and bigger cliffhanger endings each year. But one thing's for sure, it spoke to us the same way it did reading tabloids. And looked like an accurate depiction of this ruthless background, as well.
