Skunk Fu! (2007–2023)

This doesn't deserve the hate...

Warning: Spoilers
Skunk Fu, a furry show about a young skunk who does kung fu and learns to grow up. He does all of this through his guardian and mentor Panda, who has a stereotypical sensei voice, but I have no complaints about that. Skunk may be an immature character, as he sometimes lies for his personal gain, but above all that, he is just a kid and this is just a kids' show, so there needs to be some relatability. The idea that he is the chosen one to protect the valley from the evil reinforces the fact that he needs to take on responsibilities in order to grow up, so this show is solid in terms of concept.

Now to comment on other aspects that I find favorably about the show. As I described the show's solid concept, it is accompanied by positive messages on top of that, despite how much of an immature kid Skunk can be. The show has a good number of funny and witty moments that were enough to make me laugh, and by witty, I mean creatively animated fight scenes in addition to the jokes. Don't forget that this show once won an award for best animation, and I can totally see why. I have no idea why people criticize its animation because it's Flash put to good use. It's leagues ahead compared to certain other digitally animated shows at the time.

An underappreciated aspect of the show is the background music. Not only is the rap theme song done by Ghostface Killah bangin', but there's a lot of cool background music. Sometimes, it can sound like 70s funk, sometimes like East Asian hip-hop, sometimes like breakbeat, the background music is a real treat!

Now, let's comment on the character designs, and well, the characters themselves. Some characters should've been polished in my opinion, but the way they are, they don't look that bad and I have an easy time telling every character apart, and it helps that they're named after their species and designed distinctively from one another. Some of us can agree that Fox is undeniably sexy. I wouldn't say she's an offensive portrayal of females because she has a strong personality, and that's a good role model even for females. I had already commented on Skunk and Panda's father-son-like relationship, but I will give credit towards the representation of the elderly in the show. Very wise.and senile on the surface, but they have not lost their wits and ability. Then there's Tiger, who looks to be strong, but is a bit of a scaredy cat. He's not a bad character, though, he's quite charming and I wish there was more of him. The one character that bothers me is Rabbit. Rabbit can be a selfish, egotistical douchebag, and in one episode, he abused Skunk for his digging plan. He does have his good moments, but he still doesn't have my respect. I wish I could comment on other characters, but I don't want to make this too long and I wanted to describe the ones that were worth commenting on.

Anyway, with the characters out of the way, I can understand Skunk Fu had some flaws in terms of it how started, but keep in mind that it lasted only for one season (after all, the first season of every successful show turns out to be average at worst), and I could tell Cartoon Saloon wanted to expand more upon the world of Skunk Fu, but they didn't really have the money for it and some of the crew went on to work on other things, some of which are outside of animation. Regretfully, I was one of the show's haters, but as I grew up and explored more of the show out of curiosity and with an open mind, I started liking it very much like I have when I first saw it as a kid. The reason why I hated it for some time was that I blamed it on personal trauma, which I won't discuss here.

So please, just give Skunk Fu a chance, look at the positives of the show, and even if you don't like the show, recommend it to others who will potentially like it. Tastes are pretty subjective, so it's pretty important to watch with an open mind. With nothing more to say, thank you for reading my review and agreeing or disagreeing with me!
