Great Expectations (1999 TV Movie)
7/10
One of the best adaptions.

A pretty interesting version. I didn't like it that much for the first half an hour or so, the Marshes scene is a let down, it has none of the haunting chilly quality of the 1946 opening, the 2012 version is also better done. Things slowly improve though, it sort of gets stronger as it goes which is good. Estelle as a girl is okay, again not as strong as the 1946 version.

I thought Pip's abusive elder sister though was well portrayed, I like Charlotte Rambling in her role. Pip transformation into a gentleman was well done, the casting and performances of adult Pip and Estelle were really excellent. This might be the only version that gets Estelle right and others should study it. The 1946 adult version is too sweet and gentle, the 2012 version too inflamed and impassioned and sexed up, but this version gets it just right, someone emotionally cut off, cold and detached, yes beautiful and well spoken but unable to feel and yet bitterly aware of this too. The character of Joe I think was needed more in the second half of the story though, nor do we fully get the sense of Pip having lost sight of his dear good Joe. The portrayal of the lawyer is flat and clinical, not memorable I'm afraid. The series does also add in some anger and violence that wasn't needed, the climax though was well handled and shot.

Overall a few details don't work and not all the supporting cast were right, but Pip, Miss Havisham and Estelle are all done rightly.
