The Abyss (1989)
7/10
Prepare to get submerged...
19 January 2024
Of course I have seen the 1989 movie "The Abyss" before, a couple of times actually. But it is a good movie, and thus of course I opted to revisit it here in 2024, as I was given a chance to do so digitally.

"The Abyss" certainly is an iconic and memorable movie from writer and director James Cameron, just one of his many aquatic-themed movies. The storyline is nicely written, as James Cameron slowly, but surely, sets up the stage and builds up intensity and suspense.

The cast ensemble in "The Abyss" is good, and there are some great talents on the cast list, with the likes of Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Michael Biehn. The movie even has Chris Elliott in a serious role. The entire cast put on good performances in bringing the characters and storyline to life on the screen.

Visually then "The Abyss" was, and still is, a good movie. Then again, James Cameron movies have always been known for their high end special effects and visuals. "The Abyss" is no different, and the visuals in the movie are quite good, and even still hold their ground well enough today in 2024, 35 years down the line. Sure, the CGI is showing signs of aging, but still looks good. The special effects add a lot to the overall impression of the movie and to the atmosphere of the movie.

The underwater scenes are just spectacular to watch on the screen. And they are something that James Cameron certainly excel in putting to film. And the scenes with the liquid that allows people to breathe in it, well that is just amazing. To this day, I still don't know how that was made.

The props and sets are great, because it looks and feels like an underwater station, and that definitely makes the movie all the more believable and easy to get into.

"The Abyss" is a classic, and it is a movie that you should already be well familiar with. And if you aren't, then you need to go out and get a copy of the movie and sit down to watch it, because this is definitely among the finer of James Cameron movies.

My rating of "The Abyss" lands on a seven out of ten stars.
