Not having read the books, I enjoyed The Winter King for the excellent (if often gory) series it is. I found it suspenseful and atmospheric and as it was caught up on ItvX, episodes were watched back to back! Excellent casting, especially Aneirin Hughes as Gorfydd and Steven Elder as Bishop Bedwin. I believe Bernard Cornwell based The Warlord Chronicles on Welsh history and that makes it, in my mind, far more interesting than the often more magically inspired dramatised versions of the Arthurian legends. I hope a second series is going to be made, as series 1 was left on a cliffhanger and there is so much more left to tell.
