Deliver Us (2023)
5/10
Evil twin, evil kin

This one started off with a really gnarly and intriguing bang. It then pretty quickly slowed down and seemed to heavily rely on audio design for spook and jump scares.

While there were other aspects to the horror than just that, I do think one of the biggest missteps here was the pacing. This was really quite slow and is going to air much more on the side of boring rather than atmospheric or tension building for most I think. Personally, it was on the edge for me and I didn't mind it all too much. I was engaged and entertained for most of the experience.

The acting was just so-so. While he had some good moments, overall I wasn't a huge fan of our main actor as his delivery drew me out of the moment at times. I also think that they lacked on the story a bit here. While it didn't feel crazy original, it was still a solid foundation... it just didn't feel like it really went anywhere. Being a religious horror while dipping its toe into folk horror, there were a lot of opportunities and places this story could have gone but didn't.

I was leaning towards a six but unfortunately the ending was a tad unfulfilling and I think there was just a lot of wasted potential here that knocked it down a bit for me. Regardless, I did still enjoy this and would recommend to someone who doesn't mind a slower pace.
