Neither Romance nor Thematic Dichotomy Works
7 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The two elements of this episode that needed to work was the romance between Obi Wan and Satine and a fair representation of both of their points of view. Neither succeeds in this episode. Obi Wan and Satine largely bicker the entire episode or talk about situations they were involved in together in the past and that's supposed to be enough for me to buy their chemistry. I am tired of the idea that a couple constantly bickering signals romance. There are pretty much no moments in this episode or the last where it became clear to me why they were an item back in the day. There are some flirty moments but no sparks.

The other thing that doesn't work about the episode is its continual lazy approach to the pacifism versus defensive violence debate. The show never gives a fair shake to the prior argument because every situation in the show thus far can and should be solved with violence. How many times in human history has a military done more harm than good in trying to target a rebel insurgency? The Clone Wars doesn't want to get in to the fact that innocents die when bombs and guns are used. Often times, it is civilians who suffer the most! I'm not saying that this kids show needed to tackle these kinds of ideas, but if you are going to really delve in to pacifism versus defensive violence you at least need to present a more balanced argument for both.
