Deputy Marshal Sam Buckhart finds a strange man called the Dude (Robert Vaughn) wondering around. He wears thick glasses, knows how far he has walked by the length of his stride.
He is unarmed and he tells Buckhart that he has been robbed by three men who had their faces hidden.
Both men arrive in a town run by Tree Strelling and his cronies. At the saloon the Dude recognises that Tree is wearing a ring, his family heirloom that was stolen from him.
Tree challenges the Dude to a gunfight but the Dude refuses to pick up a gun. Buckhart could shoot Tree if he tries to shoot an unarmed man.
Both Buckhart and the Dude share the same saloon room. Buckhart plans to escort this eccentric man who is exploring the country, likes grizzly bears, out of the town for his own safety early the next morning.
In the middle of the night Dude recognises the Buckhart name. Both were at Harvard.
The next morning the Dude engages with a fist fight with Tree. He was after all in the university boxing club and he thrashes Tree and collects the ring.
As he departs back east the Dude tells Buckhart his real name. Theodore Roosevelt an aspiring politician.
An enjoyable comedic episode. Very much an emphasis on light relief. Robert Vaughn is having fun and I could not help noticing the stunt double for the fight scenes.
