Scandalous

Warning: Spoilers
Two pilots in love with the same woman. Where have I seen that before? Oh yeah, "The Flying Fool" (1929), "Dirigible" (1929), and "Flight" (1929). Go figure they were all released in the same year.

The female love interest in "Central Airport" could've been on an episode of Jerry Springer. As we used to say in the 90's, she was scandalous. Let me tell you what she did.

The woman's name was Jill Collins (Sally Eilers) and she was a parachutist for a circus. When her brother died in a plane crash another pilot named James 'Jim' Blaine (Richard Barthelmess) stepped in to fill the void. They traveled all over the west coast doing shows and as you could guess, they fell in love.

While dining one day Jim talked about how pilots should never marry. What he didn't notice was that Jill wasn't feeling that sentiment. She was hoping to get married, and more than likely, to him. She took his words pretty hard and gave him the cold shoulder.

The next day she was introduced to Jim's brother Neil 'Bud' Blaine (Tom Brown). Bud had eyes for Jill right away, but Jim hinted hard that she was off limits.

I'm sure you can already see where this is going.

Jim got hurt in a plane accident and was hospitalized for a month or two. Well, being the great brother he was, Bud substituted for Jim flying Jill around. They toured the west coast together doing shows and as you can guess, they fell in love.

Now how scandalous is that? Her man was on injured reserves and she gave the starting job to his brother!

And get this. Jim thought better of the marriage thing while he was hospitalized and showed up unannounced to propose. What he found was his brother in bed with his sweetheart all nice and snug. He went off on the two of them 1930's style, but he had no real recourse because they got married.

Now that's super scandalous. She didn't even give Jim a heads up, a warning, or an ultimatum; just up and married his brother. Don't get me wrong, his brother was no innocent party in this daytime talk show drama. Bud knew full well that Jim was in love with Jill. The whole thing stunk and I couldn't stand the sight of either one of them.

Jim ran off and did dangerous piloting jobs to help him forget the two back stabbers, but, just like "Dirigible," "Flight," and "Flying Fool," Jim would have to save his brother. Now how lazy is that for writing? Four movies with pilots, four love triangles (two with brothers), and four men who had to save their rivals.
