It's hard to think of an actor that could have done better in this role than Jim Carrey, he suits this film perfectly. It's true that it essentially relies off of Carrey's slapstick antics and not much else, but it's often very funny and it works pretty well.
I can't help but be a bit disappointed with the plot though: it feels like wasted potential in this aspect as it's rather thin and could have been developed much more. Nice special effects and make-up though and Carrey has good chemistry with Cameron Diaz in what is one of her earliest film roles. The rest of the acting is ok, if nothing great.
