Off With The Show! On With Ethel Waters!
20 March 2024
Sam Hardy's stage show staggers onto Broadway, leaving a string of try-outs on the road with a pile of unpaid bills. Then someone steals the box-office receipts and people wrangle backstage while the show proceeds.

The idea that people in the orchestra seats don't care what happens backstage while the show is on is a good one, but the problem is that the show, despite the applause, is another dumb Fun-on-the-Plantation plot interrupted by occasional specialty acts, is a problem. So is the large cast, which includes Arthur Lake, Betty Compson, Joe E. Brown, Sally O'Neal, and a couple of dozen others. The result is no one is around long enough to build any interest. Hampered by a poor soundtrack and a pace of talking that is turgid, it's awful. Except when Ethel Waters is singing "Am I Blue?"
