Sex & Nudity

  • A man is shown bare-chested in an extended scene.

Violence & Gore

  • A few fights are shown between men. Nobody is killed, but a small amount of blood is shown.
  • Horses and oxen are whipped on occasion, although it's only done to move them, and not in a way that is deliberately abusive.
  • In one scene the aftermath of a massacre is shown, although only the smoldering remnants of wagons are visible. A survivor is briefly shown who seems to have a bloodied shirt but otherwise appears physically unharmed, although visibly distressed. He mentioned that everyone else perished.
  • A young woman is injured by an arrow, and it is shown embedded in her body.
  • There are a few isolated instances of men shown being shot, and presumably killed.
  • There is a scene in which several men are hunting bison for its meat. The only explicit violence that is shown is the body of a dead bison after it is stabbed at close range. The bison is later briefly shown after being cooked to eat.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A few mentions of liquor, drunkenness, and sobriety.
  • Two men are shown drinking together, and in another case a man is shown drinking a somewhat large amount to get drunk.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A man falls off a horse. He then gets trapped in quick sand or something resembling it, and is saved not too long after. Strangely the man that saved him seems to threaten/want to throw him back in.
  • In a risky stunt, two men take turns shooting drinking mugs placed on top of each other's heads; neither of them miss. They may have been somewhat drunk as this was happening, as they were drinking in the previous scene.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • The battle scene between the Native Americans and pioneers isn't too violent or gory, and it only lasts around 5 minutes. A man and horse are shown being shot and shown falling down a hill. A pile of bodies are shown briefly. Additionally, there is a scene following the battle that shows men with bandages, suggesting injuries sustained during the conflict.
  • In a scene close to the end of the movie, a character shoots and presumably kills Sam Woodhall (Alan Hale Sr.) after he attempts to kill Will Banion (J. Warren Kerrigan). The body is briefly shown.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The battle scene prelude between the Native Americans and pioneers may be somewhat intense. The pioneers are shown barricaded by the Native Americans, slowly advancing towards them with some intensity. The battle itself is more violent than intense, although hardly violent either.
