Director: SAM NELSON. Screenplay: Maurice Geraghty. Photography; Benjamin Kline. Film editor: Gene Havlick. Songs: Bob Nolan. Music director: Morris Stoloff. Western Electric Sound System. Producer: Harry Decker.
Copyright 3 May 1938 by Columbia Pictures Corp. U.S. release: 12 May 1938. 6 reels. 56 minutes.
COMMENT: Director Sam Nelson handles the first 20 minutes of this one at a fantastic pace. He has the whole cast speak their lines at twice normal speed - an ingenious method of disguising the dialogue's many clichés? or maybe the screenplay was too long? I'd actually hoped that Sam was pouring on the pace to make room for some wonderful exteriors and stand-out action. But in this I was disappointed.
However, Law of the Plains ultimately turns out as an agreeable enough oater, thanks to two or three exciting stunts, fair acting (plus a choice portrait from my favorite villain, Dick Curtis), some pleasant songs from The Sons of the Pioneers, and the movie's general level of competence.
