Jeff Baker is in the hospital recovering from his recent battle with alcoholism. Penny is worried about Jeff, but tells Dr. Cassen she still loves Jeff. Chris Hughes and Grace Baker get in a row, at his office, over the proper care of Jeff.
Doug finds out that Ellen has already spoken to the Stewarts about little Danny and makes a late-night visit to their apartment to discuss the matter. He asks them the difficult question: Are you Danny's natural parents?
Betty Stewart becomes almost hysterical as she and husband David talk about Ellen getting custody of their son. Their friend Doug discusses the matter with his wife Claire then heads to the Stewart home to hash things out with them
Lisa asks Chris what he would think about her naming the baby after him. Later, Penny and Lisa quarrel over Lisa's habit of interfering in others' business.
First David and Betty talk about Ellen's insistence on being considered Danny's mother. David tells his wife the adoption was legal. Doug and Claire also discuss Ellen then Doug visits the Stewarts. Betty shows signs of coming unhinged.
Grandpa Hughes comes up with the idea of moving little Tommy into his bedroom. Bob is happy, but Lisa is indifferent. Her mind is on the dashing salesman, Bruce Elliot.
Chris informs his father about Dan's hospitalization. Ellen sees Dan in the same room where she gave birth to him. She flashes back to when he was raised by others.
In a quiet moment Ellen shares the memory of the Christmas Eve when she was pregnant, unmarried, and alone. David says he was aware she was expecting. Paul and Dan enter the room, Dan with a special gift from his grandmother.
Tom inadvertently reveals to Grandpa Hughes that he read his mother's letter to his father, Bob, and Grandpa makes him tell Bob the truth. Later, Sara gets Bob to make a house call, but it proves to be a mere pretense to see him.
Chris doesn't want to question his son Don at Amanda's trial, defers to co-founder Dick Martin. After intense testimony Dick tries to convince Amanda to change her plea to guilty, saying he knows she committed the crime.
Lisa calls Bob to say she's sick. Bob goes to examine her but makes his father Chris to promise not tell Nancy. After examining her Bob learns Lisa is pregnant and is incredulous. Pa and Chris discuss Sandy's disappearance.
Nancy talks to Chris about retirement. Barbara tells Steve she doesn't love him. Beau and Melinda quarrel about Jeff. Mary and Bob have dinner. Sandy stops suspecting Kevin of adultery. At the disco, Ginny tells Hank the good news.
Oakdale turns out in sincere grief over the tragic passing of Dan Stewart. Bob Hughes and the Reverend give touching tributes. Afterwards at the reception people extend condolences to Kim. Betsy brushes asides Kim's kindness.
Admitting their live for one another Doug and Annie proceed to kiss. Kim decides to move back home. Barbara volunteers to stay with Tom who's taking care of Sheila out of guilt.
John is worried about ex- wife Kim's mental health after her husband Dan dies and talks to David about it. Ralph is later visited by John who expresses interest in moving in preparation of getting custody of Andy from Kim.
Over the objections of her son Tom Lisa prepares to leave Oakdale with Bennett Hadley. John looks at condo Kim is prepared to buy and voices objections to her annoyance.
Lisa prepares to lead an exciting life away from Oakdale. Hester promises Bennett to quit creating difficulties. Bob receives an unexpected call from his sister Penny.
