After the retirement of the maestro of Mexican horror film Fernando Méndez in 1961, and after the most prolific Mexican director of horror movies Chano Urueta decided to turn to westerns and wrestling movies, the offer of horror cinema in México was reduced in the following years. Rafael Baledón became the central figure of the genre, with three consecutive releases in 1963-64, and a new name was added to the filmmaker list: art director Carlos Toussaint, who left set designs, décors and props, and opted for directing movies only.
Nevertheless, he only made this one horror film, which has its admirers. As it becomes a haunted house tale in the second half, Toussaint made clever use of spaces and atmosphere, suggesting potential fright of the ordinary and delivering a decisive ghostly resolution. Written by two journalists (who were also producing) it has been suggested that the story might have been based on a real-life gory chronicle. It is the classic plot of the man who marries for money and when he discovers that the bride's father was ruined, he tries to make her mad and kill her to collect her life insurance. It is an exercise in cruelty leading to death and a surprise ending.
Ex-Miss Mexico Ana Bertha Lepe is abused for 80 minutes by insufferable Sergio Jurado, as the writer wanna-be who married her for money. When I come to think of it, I realize that it still happens today, and in more violent ways. Although the husband tries to make her mad or kill her, it is a storm and the presence of a strange beggar that do the job, but the man makes a big mistake on her dying bed... Worth a look.
