Frank isn't sure that Father McShane's simple advice can help him through his resentment of Delia. Sister Mary Joel receives a gift from Mary and tells Jack he must give something to Mary. Mary proves a hit with Sam Crowell.

When Faith tries to arrange a night at the brownstone while Ed is away, Pat worries that she's becoming too involved. Jack watches soberly as Mary and Sam get along famously. Faith accuses Bucky of making trouble between her and Pat. Kenneth sees Faith upset following her disagreement with Bucky and decides to make a place for her in the abandoned morgue.

Johnny approves of Sam's offer to Mary, but Maeve remains unsure. Bob confronts Jill about her affair with Frank. Sam assures Maeve and Johnny that he has bigger plans for Mary than just answering phones in cable TV station. Johnny admits to Sam that he likes the idea of Sam's job diverting Mary's attention away from Jack. Mary discusses her reluctance with Frank and makes a decision about Channel R. Delia has another go at an inattentive and unloving Frank.

Rebuffed by Frank a needy Delia turns to Pat for comfort, much to Faith's displeasure. Jill refuses to help a desperate Roger who blames her and Frank for dragging him down with their affair. An upset Faith spies on Pat as he sings to Delia and holds her hand. Seneca asks Jill for Roger's contract, and Jill apologizes for her previous prejudice against him. Kenneth secretly witnesses a fight between Pat and Faith over her distrust of him.

Delia and Frank's fight awakens Maeve and Johnny. Seneca shares his strange dream with Nell. Maeve and Johnny discuss Frank and Delia's troubled relationship. A distraught Delia laments to Maeve that she doesn't know how to make things right with Frank.

The morning after making love, Faith professes to Pat that she's over her jealousy. Mary begins work at Channel R with a challenging task. Bucky criticizes Pat for his treatment of Faith, who Bucky knows is in for a hard fall in their relationship. Mary tempts Sam with an idea about Nick Szabo and his criminal activities. Clem catches Kenneth swiping a chair that is ostensibly for Nell, but Kenneth has other plans. Bucky offers Faith advice that she rejects. Kenneth makes preparations for Faith in the morgue.

Delia shocks Frank with her outrageous idea for saving their marriage. Johnny questions Mary about the future of her relationship with Jack. Delia's demands on Frank lead to another rejection and sends him to Jill's door.

Jill reluctantly agrees to talk with Frank. Kenneth eavesdrops on Faith's conversation with Ed and steals the keys to the Coleridge brownstone. Jill sadly insists to Frank that their relationship is over. After seeing Jill, a dejected Frank goes home to Delia and says they'll make a fresh start. Kenneth sneaks into the Coleridge home to steal a precious teacup that Faith cherishes. Later, Faith arrives home unexpectedly, and Kenneth attacks her in the dark.

Kenneth escapes without Faith recognizing him. Mrs. Monroe, an elderly patient at Riverside, mistakes Pat for her grandson. Roger comforts Faith following the attack. Kenneth slips back into the hospital and talks with Pat to establish an alibi. Johnny terminates his friendship with Nick. Pat promises to be waiting for Mrs. Monroe when she comes out of surgery. Roger reassures Faith that they'll have the locks changed at home. Faith bumps into a nervous Kenneth at the hospital but has no clue that he was the intruder. Pat suggests that Faith go away without him so that she can have time to herself.

Nell shocks Pat when she opines that Mrs. Monroe's suspected case of pneumonia might be the best thing for her. Mary explains Jack's personality quirks to Sam. Faith vents to Jill about her relationship with Pat. Pat holds Mrs. Monroe's hand as she passes away. Pat tells Mary about Mrs. Monroe's poor treatment at the nursing home. Nell offers Pat sage advice about death. Pat rejects Faith's plans for them to spend time alone at the family beach house, and her constant neediness culminates with him ending their romance.

Faith and Ed consult Bob about her stalker, and Faith insists on going to the beach house alone. Sam and Mary plan a story on Hudson River pollution. Faith fails in her bid to convince Pat to join her at the Coleridge beach house. Kenneth gets another idea when Faith reminisces about a yellow canary Ed once gave her for her birthday. Mary goofs up on her first Channel R assignment. Maeve tries to comfort Faith following her breakup with Pat but cautions her that he generally moves on to someone new. Kenneth seeks advice about keeping a canary in a room where there sun never shines.

Kenneth explains to Faith that he has created a quiet place where she can be alone to think in peace. Faith spots the teacup from her kitchen and realizes that Kenneth is the man who has been stalking her. Seneca tells Nell the fable of The Little Waters of the Senecas. Kenneth mortifies Faith with his confession about hiding in her closet when she was with Pat, and loses his cool when she impulsively declares him crazy. Nell and Seneca watch the city from their terrace. She thanks him for loving her and lets him know that she has written him a letter that's hidden in her jewelry box. Shortly afterward, Nell collapses. In the hidden room, Kenneth refuses to let Faith leave until she learns to accept his love for her. Faith makes a mad dash for freedom, but falls and is knocked unconscious in the passageway outside the morgue.

Faith regains consciousness and begs Kenneth to take her home. Seneca begs Nell not to let go following her collapse. Unable to speak or move, Nell tells Seneca in her mind how much she loves him. Kenneth carries an injured Faith back into the morgue. Faith fears her leg is broken, and Kenneth insists he'll set it for her. At Riverside, Nell is prepped for an angiogram. Bucky worries after a spinal tap shows massive amounts of blood in Nell's spinal fluid. Seneca considers operating on Nell to extend her time. Kenneth sets Faith's leg with masking tape and wooden planks, but in pain, she needs painkillers. Despite her pleas, Kenneth leaves Faith alone in the morgue.

Sam sends Jack on his way when Jack shows up at the Channel R studio to wait on Mary. Seneca justifies to Bucky trying to operate on Nell's inoperable tumor. Roger challenges Seneca for operating on his own wife and is annoyed when Seneca chooses Clem over him as his assistant. Jack irritates Sam by offering unsolicited professional advice. After sending Mary out on an interview alone, she finds it funny when her subject turns out to be Sam in disguise. Sam explains his reasoning for his joke on Mary and Jack. Bob stops by Ryan's to see Mary. Tensions flare during Nell's surgery.

After Kenneth leaves, Faith attempts to escape but in excruciating pain collapses. Delia vies with Little John for Frank's attention. Kenneth returns with pain pills for Faith. Pat tells Delia about his break up with Faith, and Delia admits her inherent jealousy to him. Later, Delia attempts to make up with Frank, but he has fallen asleep. Kenneth promises Faith that everything will be fine when she wakes up. Faith's mechanic phones Riverside to tell her that he car is ready, but the nurse explains that she has already left.

Nell's surgery is over, but her rising blood pressure concerns him. Ed encourages Seneca about Nell's condition, but then she stops breathing. Mary reassures Jack that he's the man she has always been waiting for; however, he admits that he has trouble trusting people. Seneca and Bucky save Nell by putting her on a respirator though she's still unresponsive. Jill is concerned when Faith fails to stop by on her way to the beach, but Ed dismisses it as be being preoccupied with Pat. Johnny enjoys eavesdropping on Sam and Jack sparring over Mary.

Kenneth becomes angry at Faith's declaration of love for Pat. An unconscious Nell suddenly goes into convulsions. Faith uses the page from a crossroad puzzle to write a note for help and divulging her location. An EEG is administered to determine the extent of Nell's brain damage. Faith manages to tape her note to the back of Kenneth's lab coat, and later a Riverside patient notices it.

A hospital patient reads Faith's note, but Kenneth is relieved when he realizes that she doesn't read or speak English. Seneca refuses to give up even though Nell's EEG shows that she has no cortical brainwave pattern, though he later concedes to Ed that there's no hope left. Bucky phones his mother with news that Nell is in an irreversible coma. Seneca breaks down in tears over Nell. An angry Kenneth confronts Faith and vows to not let Pat destroy her. Jill grows more concerned about Faith's absence.

Wanting to please him, an excited Delia tells Frank all about her plans to take Chinese cooking lessons from Mrs. Lem, and he disappoints her again. After Seneca laments to Maeve that Nell could live on indefinitely in a comatose state, Maeve tells him about the conversations she had with Nell regarding death. Mary encourages an unhappy Frank. Sam informs Mary that the environmental protection agency has offered to take them on a tour of the city's sewer system. When Roger shows an interest, Delia invites him to go to Lem's in Frank's place.

Pat informs Jill that he hasn't seen Faith since she left yesterday for the beach. After having fun with Delia at Lem's, Roger wants another cooking lesson together next week. Kenneth plays it cool with Pat and Jill after overhearing them talk about Faith's disappearance. Using a chair as a walker, Faith attempts to escape the morgue. When Delia stops by Frank's office and initiates another argument, this one in front of his secretary Georgia, he gives her permission to pursue outside interests. Pat takes Kenneth's advice about informing the police and calls for Bob. Kenneth's arrival interrupts Faith's escape plan, and he moves the chair out of her reach.

Faith regains consciousness and tells Kenneth that she has a head injury. Bob and Ed agree that something has likely happened to Faith. Nick pays Frank another visit that doesn't go well. Delia rejects an offer from Nick. Faith frightens Kenneth with her insistence that she has a head injury that needs medical care. Kenneth considers informing Ed about Faith but is intimidated by Bob.

Faith tells Kenneth she fears she has a subdural hematoma that could either blind or kill her, but he forces her to write a letter to her father. Sam notes Mary's odd, giddy behavior and realizes that she's sick. On the pretext of helping a solitary aunt, Kenneth questions Pat about falls and head injuries. Ed shows Pat the note from Faith that Kenneth slipped under his door., though Pat doubts its veracity. In front of Kenneth, the two vow to find the man who took Faith and make him pay. Sam escorts Mary to Ryan's where Pat examines her. Faith refuses to eat and warns Kenneth that if she doesn't get medical help she's going to die.

Delia nags Frank about being a neglected wife, and he becomes angry. Neurosurgeon Dr. Hagen confirms bad news about Nell's recovery. Delia runs into Jill at Riverside and uses her fears about Faith's disappearance to make an analogy to Jill's failed relationship with Frank. Seneca and Bucky discuss the possibility of removing Nell from life support. Delia accepts another date with Roger when they both find one another completely charming.

Mary is admitted to Riverside with a suspected case of meningitis. Seneca places Clem in an untenable position as Nell's attending physician. Sam arrives at Mary's hospital room following a spinal tap. Roger and Delia really start cooking in the Coleridge kitchen. A delirious Mary mistakes Sam for Jack.

A deteriorating Faith begs Kenneth to get Pat. Jack makes it to Mary's bedside as Seneca and the other doctors try to diagnose her illness. Seneca talks with Kenneth about closing up Nell's laboratory and notes his books on subdural hematomas. The gas is momentarily turned off at Riverside, causing the pilot light in Faith's morgue room to be extinguished. Nick seeks advice from Maeve about his unruly teenage daughter Reenie. Bob and Ed have an expert examine Faith's note and determine that it is in Faith's handwriting. Bob guesses that Faith was kidnapped by her secret admirer who probably works in the hospital. Faith slowly suffocates as the hospital gas is turned back on.

A semiconscious Faith continues to breathe in gas. Seneca gives his diagnosis of Mary to Jack and Maeve. Bob shares with Pat and Bucky his suspicions about Faith's kidnapper. Although they dismiss Kenneth as a suspect, a suspicious Bob vows to keep an eye on him. Maeve and Jack have a serious conversation about his terms for a relationship with Mary. Kenneth panics when he suddenly realizes that the gas jets in the morgue are still turned on. Meanwhile Faith's bird is dead, and she's unconscious.

Kenneth races to the morgue and carries Faith to safety. Pat informs Bob of Kenneth's strange behavior earlier. Seneca remembers a conversation with Nell regarding her feelings about letting go. Bob and Pat talk Kenneth's landlady into giving them access to his room. Seneca's mother Marguerite arrives. After she regains consciousness and has difficulty breathing, Faith begs Kenneth for medical help. Marguerite recalls an argument between Nell and Seneca. Faith's breathing becomes more labored.

Nick and Georgia overhear an argument between Frank and Delia. Bucky introduces Mary to her new hospital roommate Mrs. Mills who is reluctant to discuss the circumstances surrounding a fall that seriously injured her. Nick warns Frank that he's made waves and now has to set things right. Reenie Szabo and her friend Leo phone for Nick's help. Mary learns from a frightened Mrs. Mills that she's a resident of the same nursing home that also house Pat's late patient Mrs. Monroe. Each having experienced a bad day, Roger and Delia plan another cooking lesson together.

When Frank overhears Delia talking on the phone with Roger, she pretends she's going to visit her friend "Sheila". Kenneth eludes security at Riverside to make his way down to the morgue. A nurse tips off Pat that she just saw Kenneth leaving the oxygen room and entering the hospital stairwell. Nick arrives at Reenie's hotel to find that she can't walk. Kenneth races down the stairs unaware that Pat is following him. Delia decides she can stay as late as she wants with Roger since no one cares where she is. Kenneth informs Faith that they're in trouble and he has to leave her, but before he can go, Pat finds them.

Kenneth doesn't want Pat to touch Faith because he always hurts her. Roger doesn't understand why the Ryans don't appreciate Delia. While Pat examines Faith, Kenneth quietly slips out and runs away. Faith asks Pat if she's going to die. Delia sings the praises of her cooking class to Maeve then secretly phones Roger. Pat has to leave Faith to go for help, and she begins to panic.

Faith is rescued from the morgue. Jack confesses to Mary that he worried he'd lose her, and now realizes he's beginning to love her in the same way she loves him. Jill cautions Seneca that anyone who turns off Nell's life support will likely be charged with, and convicted of, homicide. Mrs. Mills confides in Mary that she and others in the nursing home go hungry, but she fears retaliation if Mary attempts to help her. Ed promises Faith that she's safe and the police are looking for Kenneth, but she insists he's coming back for her.

Nick clashes with Bucky when he and Reenie arrive at Riverside Hospital. Reenie fears her paralysis will reach her lungs and kill her. Delia reminds Frank that she's waiting to have sex with him now that he's not with Jill. Marguerite asks Seneca to consider if Nell would want him to risk his freedom and ability to practice medicine in order to set her free. Reenie reveals to Bucky that she and Leo were eloping when she got sick. Nick refuses to find Leo for Reenie. An upset Delia vows to Maeve that she's going to show Frank how bad an unhappy marriage can get.

When Frank comes home early to spend time with her and Little John, Delia gives him the silent treatment and makes a date with Roger. Mary introduces Sam, and later Frank, to her hospital friend Mrs. Mills. Frank tells Mary he can't help Mrs. Mills at the nursing home unless she overcomes her fears and talks to him. Delia and Roger's newfound friendship turns passionate. Seneca argues Nell's right to die with Marguerite and Bucky. After Marguerite sings a death chant, Seneca leaves for the hospital.

Kenneth torments Faith's dreams. At the hospital, Seneca holds Nell's hand and recalls their time together. Roger gives Reenie a tentative diagnosis of Guillain Barre syndrome, and neither she nor Nick are happy with the prescribed treatment. Faith insists to Ed and Bob that Kenneth isn't through with her. Pretending to be Pat, Kenneth convinces the hospital operator to put his call through to Faith. Faith becomes hysterical when Kenneth says he loves her and is coming for her. Bob decides to have a 24 hour guard outside Faith's hospital room. After he imagines Nell telling him that she loves him and will wait for him, Seneca turns off her respirator and holds her as a shocked Roger enters the room.

Seneca orders Roger out of Nell's room and kisses her as she passes over. Roger stuns Bucky with the news of Nell's death and Seneca's involvement. Johnny visits Faith, but screams in terror after imagining he's Kenneth. Bucky encourages Seneca to go talk with Jill. Bucky sits alone with Nell and promises he'll stand by Seneca. Ed promises Faith that Kenneth won't ever hurt her again. Kenneth phones in a flower arrangement for Faith. Seneca informs Jill of Nell's death, and Jill agrees to represent him. Roger shocks Clem with the news that Seneca murdered Nell.

Pat tells Sam about Mrs. Monroe and Mrs. Mills experiencing neglect in her nursing home. Seneca doesn't like it when Jill won't allow him to talk to Bob, who offers his condolences. Jill warns Seneca again that anyone he speaks with is a potential witness for the prosecution. Faith continues to experience double vision and rejects Pat's overtures of friendship. The arrival of flowers from Kenneth sends Faith into another fit of hysteria. Sam questions upset Mrs. Mills. Alone in their apartment, Seneca reads a letter from Nell in which she expresses her last wishes.

Nick interrupts Jack, who is broaching the subject of marriage with Mary. Frank unwittingly pushes Delia closer to Roger. Nick convinces Mary and Jack to visit Reenie, but they reject Reenie's request that they contact Leo for her. Roger details for Delia his involvement with Seneca and Nell's death. Jack informs Mary that he's ready to explore the idea of marrying her.

Roger and Delia plan their evening together, and it's full of innuendo. After Mary tells her that Jack is considering marriage, Maeve wonders if marriage to him is what Mary really wants. Ed accuses Roger of having ulterior motives for turning Seneca in to the police. Hugh Sharp, the man who runs the Gilchrest Manor nursing home, visits Mrs. Mills. Mary notes Mrs. Mills' fear when Sharp comments about her appetite. Just as Roger and Delia begin to succumb to their mutual passion, Jill arrives.

Delia hides when Roger is forced to let Jill in the apartment, and Jill realizes someone else is there. Bucky invites Maeve and Johnny to attend Nell's memorial service, but Johnny puts his foot in his mouth by bringing up Seneca's trouble. Roger gives a statement to Jill. Delia decides to go too after Jill leaves. Bucky and Marguerite read Nell's letter to Seneca. Delia complains to Maeve the unfairness of men being able to have an affair but women can't and wonders how Frank would feel if she did.

Faith admits to Mary that Pat reminds her of being alone and abandoned in the morgue.

Bob and Johnny want Frank to consider a run for Congress but he's worried about the money he's need to finance a campaign. Delia reacts to Frank's potential run. Maeve recalls for Seneca her conversations with Nell about life support. Roger insists to Clem he honestly believes what Seneca did was wrong. Nick tells Reenie about Bucky's fortune. After a fight with Frank, Delia phones Roger.

After hearing about Bucky's wealth, Reenie apologizes to him. Ed tried to comfort Faith who needs surgery to save her eyesight. A deranged Kenneth vows that he'll never forgive Faith, who intends to punish. Reenie's frantic need to retrieve a suitcase intrigues Sam. Later, Reenie admits it contains photos of her and Leo that are intimate in nature, but he refuses to help her get it back when he realizes she's not being completely honest with him.
