Where did this gem go?
Zorro-32 September 2000
This is the best production of Cinderella ever. I can't figure out why it has never been (as far as I can tell) rerun. It features an all-black cast, in a modern setting, with a Cinderella (Cindy) who wants to marry not a prince, but a military man.

In this version, Cinderella's father pretends to have a fancy job at a hotel, but is, in actuality, the men's room attendant.

Cinderella's mom follows him to work one day and angrily confronts him, "You ain't nothing but a lyin, cheatin MEN'S ROOM ATTENDANT!" leading into one of the best numbers I have ever seen in a musical. The men at the hotel rush to Dad's defense in a song, "The Best Damn Men's Room Attendant In the History of the Palace Hotel." At one point, a line of about twenty men file out of one bathroom stall playing brass instruments!

Where did this gem go????

Fun & hilarious
reedme101818 February 2021
This musical re-telling of Cinderella had me laughing out loud and dancing to some of the songs they sang, especially the Sugar Hill Ball & the one about being a men's room attendant.

Glad someone else has seen this! What ever happened to it?
moviejoed19 January 2002
I saw this movie when I was a senior in high school. I asked a couple of people the next day if they saw it; no one had. To this day, I still haven't met anyone who saw it. Sometimes I, too, thought I imagined it.

I remember laughing all the way through. The part I remember most is the deadpan way the father (I think) told Cindy that the stepmother(?) was excommunicated from her church for belting out a gospel song in their staid congregation.

I've always wondered if their was some particular reason why it was never shown again.

I can't even find it on video, not even at alternative or "art" video stores.

I knew it existed!
di-di5 February 2001
I saw this movie one time when I was six years old, I'm now 29, and I never forgot it. I asked people through out college and my working years, "Do you remember a black version of 'Cinderella' called 'Cindy' and the little girl had to sleep in the bath tub?" And everyone's response was "No", so I was really starting to think that I had imagined the whole thing, but IMDB is wonderful, because it proved I wasn't crazy...It does exist! And, though I don't remember every detail, it was a great and refreshing update to the old fairy tale. I am proud to be one of the few people who saw it, and better than that, remember it.

I Remember Cindy
M-Bell227 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
When I first saw the movie Cindy it was in the summer of 1997 on the Disney Channel. I was twelve years old. I am a big fan of Nell Carter so I felt obligated to see this movie. What a show! I got to listen too jazz scattin songs like,"The Sugar Hill Ball", the song from the jumprope scene called "My Name Is Cindy", and the gospel song from the church scene, "Hide Within Beneath My Soul". Actresses Nell Carter, Alaina Reed, and Charlaine Woodard were my favorite characters in the movie. I mean where else can you see a musical movie where as soon as a song begins to play,a live band of jazz musician walk right into the room playing there instruments as the actors begin to sing. It was brilliant! Nell Carter was just as vibrant, sassy, and sultry as I remember her. I am outraged that I cannot find this masterpiece on DVD or VHS. I need to take that trip back to the Sugar Hill Ball just like I did the first time. Classic Cinderella AIN'T GOT Nothing ON THIS! To all of my fellow Nell Carter fans don't you think it's time that every movie or stage play that Nell has done should be released on video including "CINDY"? This legendary actress is no longer among the living and its time for her fans to collect there memorabilia of her. GIVE US CINDY ON VIDEO!

I thought I was crazy
swepsoni8 November 2006
I thought I was crazy because everyone I asked had never seen this movie. I contacted every television station until I found out who aired this movie. Having only seen it once I find it amazing how much of a impact it had on me. I like you all would love to own a copy of this movie and if anyone has a copy then PLEASE contact me at Swepsoni@AOL.com. If not I think we should all contact the T.V. station and request copies or at least for it to be aired again. This is definitely one to keep, cherish and share with those who missed this wonderful adaptation. It has been a pleasure reading all of your comments and knowing that I am not the only one who saw the movie.

I would love to add this movie to my collection!!!
his_luv2323 December 2006
We had Cindy on tape as kids but misplaced it when we moved. Has anyone had any success in locating Cindy?? If so please contact me at his_luv23@yahoo.com so that I may obtain a copy. I would love to show this movie to my children as well, To me it is more than a classic but a piece of African-American history. The cast, the set, the music, it was all so invigorating and exciting. I would love to experience this movie again.

Hope someone finds Cindy. It is truly a classic.

Please if you have any information about how I can get a hold of this movie, I would surely appreciate it.

Wonderful, and it straightens out the ending
Nozz2 November 2000
Hey, I recognize this. I surfed into the middle of it on a far-off channel and never knew what it was called. I hit the channel just as the stepsisters were scat-singing about how it's all gonna be happening at the ball. Wonderful stuff. And I was particularly impressed at the un-dumbing of the ending. Let's face it, the traditional Cinderella is nothing but "Who wants to marry a multi-millionaire" and we all know how dumb that is in the twenty-first century. So for this version, the writers used an ending that is equally happy but brings positive values to the fore.

Cindy's lovely singing is the best thing about this musical.
unavailheart22 September 2019
The best thing about this movie is Cindy's lovely singing, especially the church scene. I don't like that it was somewhat of a parody. Because it was done that way, it allowed for too much condescension and mean-spiritedness by the male leads towards the female leads. The lines when the draft-dodger calls Cindy "country," and when he said he was "marrying a stupid girl," turned me off. I was also put off when the military man tells one of the step sisters the military was looking for nerve gas volunteers. It was a funny roast, but unnecessarily cutting. The men came off as jealous queens with those lines. As with Dorothy in both the Wizard of Oz and the Wiz, I didn't care for using obviously adult women in adolescent roles. Why not tweak the writing a bit to make them young adults, in all aspects of the roles? They should all take a queue from Ever After with Drew Barrymore (the best done version in my opinion). The all Black cast was different, but it's not a version I'd watch again.

I have been searching 20+ years for this wonderful movie!
s_temberlove16 December 2001
I first saw this movie when I was 18 years old. It was wonderful! I have been searching and asking about this movie since that time. I am now 42 years old. Clifton Davis played the Prince and he was perfect for the role - tall, dark, and fine. I was beginning to think that I had dreamed the entire movie in my mind. No one I have ever asked have seen the movie. I even shared that it was with all black cast members, still no one remembers it. To my knowledge it was only released on television and only shown the one time in 1978. This is a movie that has held a very special place in my heart for more than half my life - I'm ecstatic to have finally found it and now know the name of the movie to be "Cindy" instead of Cinderella!

Soooo relieved!!!
tabjaxon13 July 2010
I CAN NOT believe that there are other people on this planet that have seen this movie besides me!! I have never, and I mean NEVER found anyone else that has seen this movie but me!! I recorded it when I was little back when ABC showed a Disney movie every Saturday but my mom eventually threw it away because it was on some old tape. I swear I thought I had dreamed up the entire movie. I remember asking my sister if she remembered it, from Cindy's "worn" little white keds shoes, to the step sister putting Vaseline on her foot to squeeze her foot in Cindy's shoe, but she just looked at me like I was crazy. Man, I really loved this movie and if anyone out there has a copy, please let me know. I'll buy it from you!! No bull. That movie is a classic. Where in the world did it ever go?!?!

"Cindy" made for television 1978
memrx26 July 2006
i guess i must have been one of the lucky ones to have viewed "Cindy" on television in the late '70's. i knew the name of the movie, couldn't remember how old i was when i saw it, but i did remember that i enjoyed this movie immensely!!

i remember, as a child, i would tape record things off of the television that i knew i would enjoy, and then i would play the cassette over and over again, memorizing the words and/or songs.

"Cindy" was my most favorite of all!!! As a child, i'd always loved Disney's Cinderella, but me being a little black girl, "Cindy" was a little more believable. The movie had such an impact on me!! I am 42 years old now, and i still have fond memories of this movie.

I know, "Love is the magic, Cindy" word for word, let me try...

"Some people declare, that the world is just a machine, that there ain't no magic out there, never will be, never has been...

"Some folks, even now, (say it) all according to law, what goes up, has got to come down, every thing that is, has a cause...

?"Now i just got one word to say to them all and thats ?bunk? "Now i just got one word to say to them all, and thats ?buuuunk?

'Cause... Love is the magic, Cindy... Love is the miracle... Love is a ?cockeyed? notion that breaks very rule... When you're eleven, Cindy, you're part of a miracle. That makes this dusty old world shine like a jewel. Love is the secret potion, Love is a mystic wand, A sky full of diamond pinwheels, That sparkle and gleam!!!! Love is the magic, Cindy! i said, Love is the magic, Cindy! Cause if it ain't, it sure feels like it is... Even if it ain't, it sure feels like it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(how'd i do??)

Smile!! Lisa

A perfect 10!
jnsavage326 May 2003
I remember this gem very well. I believe it was filmed on video stock (like the soaps). I think it is feature-length, although it moves so quickly and it's so enjoyable that the time flies by as you watch it. I cannot understand why it is not available on DVD or any other format.

Charlayne Woodard does a fantastic job portraying a modern day Cinderella living in Harlem. Well, its not quite modern day, since it seems to be set back in the 1930's. I love her constantly sweet disposition in spite of the abuse she has to endure. And we see that it pays off in the end.

The supporting cast is wonderful.

I don't consider myself a fan of musicals, but the songs are really catchy and great to listen to. Ms. Woodard proves to be an excellent singer, as well as Nell Carter and the rest of the vocals.

I had video taped this off of the Disney channel in the mid 1980's and I last viewed it around 98, but then I loaned it out and it was last seen. As I viewed it though, I realized that, in spite of being made in 1978, it doesn't have that "dated" feel about it and has actually aged very well.

This would be a welcomed treat to watch for any age, especially in these days of horrible "family" TV programming. This one gets 10 out of 10 stars.

So Glad To Find Other People Who Adore CINDY!
thatnewsguy20 December 2005
I remember this made for television movie and I actually recorded it on a BETA version VCR. I actually carted around that German-tank-sized BETA deck to my friends house so we could enjoy this gem. Unfortunately, my BETA machine and about 20 BETA tapes, including Cindy, got stolen. Like other I too have been trying to find Cindy ever since.

My most memorial character was the doorman -- a great study in "black mother wit."

I also loved Scooey Mitchell's famous line when going through the family's garbage can pulls out chicken bone with meat, and then says, "Don't folks know there's a war going on."

Finally, Cindy is the movie that I first saw and then feel in love with the late Nell Carter as a performer -- she is truly one Chicago's greatest musical products. I lived in Evanston at the time and had graduated from Northwestern and I was proud of any Chicago talent.

One friend said Cindy re-ran in recent years on the Disney Channel, but he did not record it. Come on Disney, please consider taking it out of your vault and make it available on DVD. IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO GET A COPY FOR ME -- I WOULD LOVE TO GET IT.

wonderful,full of swing and jazz
low_c_sharp16 September 2004
I wish there was a way for me to get a copy of it again. But, Cindy will be a Musical that will remain with you for the rest of your life. I saw it twice when I had to have been 7 or 8 years old and the show stopping numbers still resound in my ears.

From Ms. Woodard's soulful rendition of " Receive My Soul" to Ms Carter's and Ms. Hall's bouncy number " Sugar Hill Ball". Cleavant Derricks was just as award winning as his next major Broadway role of Dreamgirls. The cast in it's entirety gives you a "warm this is how the fairy tale would be if it was in Harlem " essence.

The Movie "CINDY"(1978)
tjgulley3524 August 2011
I have been looking for this Movie for so Long. I was 9yrs old when I saw this movie, this was my 1st and only time; however I can remember the story line and some of the songs like it was yesterday. It left such a great impact on my life, I grew up in Brooklyn and this movie took place in Harlem, so I could really relate to the movie. My mother was from the south, so it was so real for me. I even remember the sugar Hill Ball, I think it was called that. I am having a hard time finding this movie. For years I have been asking about this movie, however everyone in my age group and older, say they have no idea what I am talking about.I could not remember the woman who played as Cindy, until I did a little research. Clifton Davis and Neil Carter I did remember. There are certain things that really stand out about the movie, like Cindy sleeping in the bath tub. The fire escape really stands out.If anyone knows where I can find this movie please reach out.

Can't wait to view the movie with my daughter
queenerni27 August 2008
How excited I was to find some info about this movie.I was so glad to find some info online about the movie Cindy. It's true not many people remember the movie. Some were trying to convince me I just dreamed about it.

The movie Cindy was recently brought to my mind when we visited Disney World in Florida this summer.I have a 6 year old daughter who loves the Disney Princesses. To say the least she was just overjoyed when she got to dress up completely as the princess of her choice. She chose Cinderella. She was truly an Icon of the Theme Park. The experience was priceless. But I noticed the lack of diversity in Disney princesses despite the diversity of the thousands of visitors swarming the park. I thought how more relevant it would be for my daughter to see a princess there of African descent. I hope I'm able to obtain a copy of Cindy for my daughter to view.

An excellent heartwarming musical
antea114 December 2006
I loved the era for the setting of the story. The acting, singing, dancing are wonderful to behold and this version of "Cinderella" is great because it shows that "true" love and happiness is not necessarily about $$, as are most other versions but, about what is in one's heart. It has a bit of comedy, which is appealing for the era in which it is set. I look at this musical often; (I copied it from TV (A&E) in 94/95) and enjoy it each time I view it. I want my children and grandchildren to realize what a classic this particular Musical really is.

It is shameful that the "Industry" has not endeavored to put this Musical in a VHS/DVD format for sale/rent so that those who wish to rent/purchase it might do so. I am sure with today's technology that doing so should not be a problem.

Cindy

I have been looking for this movie for years. I went to Block Buster Video to see if I could have it ordered to no avail. Anyway, this was the black version of Cinderella and it took place in Harlem. It was a musical and it was truly a great cast. Nell Carter played one of the evil step sisters and Clifton Davis played Cindy's prince (a military man). The movie came on PBS and it was the first movie that I could totally relate to because it was an all black cast. They sang, danced and they even jumped double dutch. I also remember that Cindy's dad was a men's room attendant at a big hotel and he lied about his job. I absolutely loved this movie and would love to get a copy of it. Excellent movie!

Movie Cindy (1978) available on DVD
s02601528 April 2008
Hi there!

I have good news for all of you who are searching for a copy of Cindy on DVD.

The movie was aired in Germany in the early 80s and I recorded it on VHS tape. Unfortunately it is only in long play quality and has German subtitles. But I guess it is better to have that one than not to have it at all. I just finished copying the VHS tape on DVD and am now ready to make extra copies for everyone who is still searching for that movie.

If you are still interested in a copy, please contact me on s0260152@freenet.de .

Does anyone know where i can find a copy??
enbatts6 March 2010
OMG I loved this movie as a child I almost forgot about it until I was sitting here trying to find old children movies and cartoons that I used to watch as a child. What is shown on TV now a days is most certainly not for children. Well at least not for my children. I want my child to experience the same as I did. I want my child to know that there are black people out here in this world that do make movies. I want her to be able to accept her own and love herself and movies like this will help her to understand that we are capable of making movies just as anyone else. I don't want my baby to grow up to fast and these films help them to keep their youth, I want my child to play with dolls at the age of 12. If anyone gets a copy please let me know as I will do the same for you all!!!
