The chemistry between Daffy and Sylvester make this fun to watch
TheLittleSongbird26 December 2013
Not a patch on the Looney Tunes and all the characters here have been in much better cartoons. The Yolks on You is still quite good this said and is the best of the three cartoons that are part of Daffy Duck's Easter Special, the others are the decent if mediocre Daffy Flies North and the relatively lacklustre The Chocolate Chase(personal opinion of course). The story revolves mainly around Daffy and Sylvester and their attempts at getting a certain egg from one another, their antics are entertaining but the premise is rather predictable and not much different from other cartoons with a similar idea. Foghorn is fun and what makes him so endearing is here(he is important to the story too) but he doesn't have a huge amount to do, much of The Yolks on You bases on Daffy and Sylvester which makes Foghorn a little side-lined comparatively, though not bad enough to be a complete waste. The characters also could have done with more flow and finesse at times. Much of the animation is fine though, the backgrounds have signs of detail and fluidity and the vibrant(without falling into the too flat or too bright camps) colours are easy on the eye. The music is catchy and characterful as well as nicely orchestrated, not bombastic, not pedestrian and not too repetitive. It doesn't enhance the action as well as the Looney Tunes cartoons of the 40s-early 60s but it still serves The Yolks On You well. The dialogue is easy to understand and there is evidence of sharp wit(if not quite the freshness) and very funny stuff, it also has a good amount of flow. The gags, the best of them coming from Daffy, are well-timed and helped by the crisp pace and well matched visuals are very amusing and not less than that. The story is not much new but the pace is not bogged down as a result, there is a good amount of energy to The Yolk's On You. Daffy and Sylvester are charismatic and immensely entertaining to watch(their chemistry being the highlight), their verbal and physical sparring not wasting them for a second, it may make a little more sense though if Sylvester was partnered with Foghorn, at least it's nowhere near another Daffy and Speedy partnership. Most importantly both are true to what is so good about them as characters in the first place, Daffy is closer to the manic duck than the overly-greedy one(think of his outings with Speedy in regard to the latter, The Chocolate Chase also showed that side), here it is more a hybrid of both and it works. Mel Blanc brings all the characters but Prissy to life and does it brilliantly, the material is even funnier with his delivery. As Prissy Nancy Wible is no Bea Beanderet but does a worthy job still. Overall, a fun if slightly unexceptional cartoon. Of the special it is by far the best of the three cartoons featured and is actually better than most Looney Tunes of the late 60s. 7/10 Bethany Cox

If there's REALLY no crying over spilled milk . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . then I guess there's no need to cry me a river over Daffy Duck and Sylvester Cat vandalizing, sabotaging, and otherwise wasting a truckload of oblong white things the Pro-Lifers would classify as 10,000 chickens. (Out of respect for the Schlafly Family in these Trying Times, I won't try to answer the question "Which came first, Phyllis or her egg?") Nearly every day we read of a semi-truck overturning on an American interstate, spilling its entire load of frozen turkeys, molasses, bananas, or rum across even the high-speed passing lane. Such catastrophic unintentional destruction of countless potential calories is NEVER a laughing matter in Real Life. It's not very humorous in THE YOLK'S ON YOU, either, which is perhaps why Warner Bros. apparently edited out the conclusion of this wrong-headed truck tragedy while lumping this in with THE CHOCOLATE CHASE and DAFFY FLIES NORTH to form DAFFY DUCK'S EASTER EGG-CITEMENT, which is a special feature on Looney Tunes Golden Collection, Volume 6, Disc 1.

Stupid

A weird cartoon that was part of the television special called Daffy Duck's Easter Show (aka Daffy Duck's Easter Egg-citement). The cartoon starts with Foghorn Leghorn (in his first appearance since 1964) as some sort of boss of a hen house where Miss Prissy works. She's not laying normal eggs so Foghorn gives her a warning to lay a good egg or she'll be shipped to the "old hens home." So then Prissy lays a golden egg and discards it, leading to an abrupt shift in which the cartoon suddenly becomes a Daffy & Sylvester story as the two find the egg and fight over who gets to have it. I don't even know what's going on here. It's a waste of Foghorn and Prissy to have them there just to introduce a short featuring two characters that have nothing to do with one another and don't mesh well.

As with most of the Looney Tunes cartoons produced after the classic era, this one is lacking in pretty much every way. The animation is like something out of a cheap coloring book. The music and sound effects are TV quality and I don't mean that as a compliment. The jokes, if we're kind enough to call them that, are unfunny. The best things I can say about it is that the colors are nice and it features the voice work of the incomparable Mel Blanc. Nancy Wible is credited as the voice of Miss Prissy. She's a far cry from Bea Benaderet, who sadly passed away in 1968. This, like the rest of the Daffy Easter Show, is a cartoon that does little but remind us of how much artistry went into making the classic Looney Tunes theatrical shorts and how far Warner Bros. animation had fallen by 1980.

Well, its not a great cartoon.....

Yeah, This isn't a very good cartoon. While the Pairing of Sylvester and Daffy together might appeal to some people, it just doesn't work for me. I mean... He's a duck, Who eats lots of water plants and small aquatic animals, scrounging through dumpsters with a cat and planning to eat other things that don't make sense, the cartoon would have worked if they left out Daffy (sadly) and Kept Sylvester. Also Miss Prissy is a bit of an annoying character, and foghorn leghorn should have done more, and the Animation looks like it was theorized by a 7 year-old, and yeah..... its not a great cartoon. Just Bland all over.

3/10.
