Much more sophisticated than the plotline indicates.

Warning: Spoilers
Karen Gordon's name might as well be Stephanie Forrester. The head of a prominent real estate agency, she's quite commanding and very glamorous, and she runs a different kind of business on the side or out of town clients who want some companionship. No Street corner operator this lady. Susan Flannery who won multiple Emmys for playing the matriarch of a family who ran a prominent Los Angeles fashion firm on "The Bold and the Beautiful", gets to be a lot more easy going and less manipulative than Stephanie was, perhaps closer to the character of Leslie Stewart that she had played the previous season on "Dallas".

So in watching this film, the idea that three women in need of quick money turn to prostitution goes straight out the window, because it is a lot more honorable than that, just as an escort service with male employees escorting older women wouldn't necessarily indicate something physical. That being said, Flannery subtlety indicates that the physical side of the business could be required, if the additional price is right.

Definitely ahead of its time in the women's sexual revolution, this shows the life as seen through three different women. Karen Valentine's husband is going through some financial issues so she wants to help out, and divorced mother Jamie Lee Curtis is in debt herself. The younger Linda Purl, who works as Flannery's real estate company stenographer, gets into the life simply because she's there.

This is a surprisingly good drama where you respect the three women for the strength that they have to find to endure their hardships. It is not played for comedy in any way, yet there is no finger pointing or judgmental attitudes, just a drama about survival, where the experience of the three ladies promises to make them stronger perfect and survive the tough times and the not so gentlemanly clients. The men presented in that way are not one dimensional or cliched, although a few deserve the slap that Curtis gives to Joe Lambie.

Money on the Side isn't outstanding, but it offers enough worthwhile elements to make it worth a watch

I recently watched Money on the Side (1982) on Tubi. The storyline follows a group of ladies facing financial struggles, resorting to desperate measures for extra income while trying to keep their activities secret from friends, families, and law enforcement.

Directed by Robert L. Collins (Savage Harvest), the film stars Karen Valentine (Gidget Grows Up), Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), Linda Purl (Mighty Joe Young), and Richard Masur (The Thing).

Money on the Side is a unique 80s film about prostitution. While the concept is solid, I wasn't fond of the incorporation of interview/therapy aspects into the main storyline. The acting is inconsistent, though Jamie Lee Curtis delivers a strong, relatable performance. The ladies are stunning, and the ending feels realistic.

In conclusion, Money on the Side isn't outstanding, but it offers enough worthwhile elements to make it worth a watch. I'd give this a 6/10 and recommend seeing it at least once.

A pretty good movie of the week about prostitution...
elliottrainbow6 March 2000
This made for TV movie stars Karen Valentine, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Linda Purl as three women who become prostitutes for different reasons. Karen plays a woman whose son needs a special school. Jamie Lee's character likes the thrill of hooking and Linda's character is saving the money to buy a house. This isn't landmark television but it's better than the title suggests. Karen Valentine is always a top-notch professional actress and she delivers a strong portrayal here. Jamie Lee Curtis and Linda Purl are also good in their roles. Catch this movie if it comes on late night TV (sadly, it doesn't very often) and I think you will like it.

Great acting by Susan Flannery
Loveneverfails9 July 2007
A very interesting movie of the week, made even better by the superb acting by Suan Flannery, who played a Madam. Ms. Flannery looked gorgeous and played a very cool "businesslike" role. There were also many other people in this movie who are well known and do good work. Some famous actresses in it played "women of the night." All of them were very good and played excellent roles. Linda Purl did a good job. Karen Valentine was also good. Jamie Lee Curtis has always been a very good actress and didn't let us down in this movie either. All of these people needed extra money and were desperate enough to try prostitution.

One Jamie Lee's best non horror acting roles !!!
BrendanBakos-131 October 2018
Money On The Side (1982 ) is very well acted by the three main actors & l said this one of Jamie Lee's best TV movies since leaving horror movies back in 1981.Her performance is good as are all of other supporting actors , without giving away anything there is a very sad moment that happens to one of the ladies , the film is about three women who decided to go into prostitution they all have there reasons for doing it ! . Do your self a favour & see this TV movie filled with drama but it's also very moving & very sad at times from the point of view of three wonderfully acted ladies

jamie lee does it AGAIN
jaylishous17 November 2001
this movie is full of camp jamie lee fabulousness. from the lee press on nails, to her shamelessly swinging around her mullet like a sex kitten, this movie delivers the goods. not that i'm saying it's good, but who watches jamie lee movies for quality anyway. we watch them for jamie lee. my personal favorite scene is the "airport" scene when the three ladies are waiting for their "dates" and there is such an obvious battle between the three actresses for the most dramatic display! HA! and of COURSE jamie lee wins the crown BIG time. God, i'm laughing right now just thinking about it.

Probably the Best Made-For-Tv Movie Ever
atomicis27 November 2023
I'm giving it an absurdly high nine out of ten because, for its genre, this flick is better than any I have seen. The acting is 10/10. The lighting is so good that it calls attention to it. Karen Valentine -- I forgot that she existed, let alone that I had a crush on her from the moment I saw her -- I think I was seven XD... I have never enjoyed a G-rated TV movie as much as this (unless you count the Rockford Files). Do watch it, if you're on the fence (I saw it November 2023 on Tubi)... ....Well I see that my concise review does not fulfill IMDB's strict character count, so I'll recap the first telephone conversation here: "Mary had a little..." Okay, now it's verbose enough. Peace out.
