Hulu’s official trailer for High Hopes introduces the central players of this unscripted series set in the cannabis industry. The six-episode season premieres, of course, on 4/20, and was executive produced by Jimmel Kimmel.
“High Hopes is a workplace reality series following Belarus-born brothers Slava and Mishka, and their stoned crew through the trials and tribulations of taking their cannabis business to new heights,” reads Hulu’s synopsis. “As one of the oldest cannabis dispensaries in Hollywood, Mmd attracts a wild mix of weed-loving customers and is a home away from home for their Og employees who work hard and smoke harder! This season builds to their biggest day of the year—4.20—as the gang attempts to expand nationwide and release their own top-shelf cannabis brand. Will they find what they’re looking for or will their hopes go up in smoke?”

Women’s History Month may be over, but that doesn’t mean that women aren’t leading many of Hulu’s top picks for April. The month begins with the premiere of Vanderpump Villa, a Hulu Original reality series that follows Lisa Vanderpump and the hand-selected staff members employed at her lavish French estate, Chateau Rosabelle. This next chapter in the Vanderpump saga is sure to be full of drama, decadence, and debauchery as the staff caters to Vanderpump, her wealthy guests, and their own desires.
Hulu Original Under the Bridge, based on the 1997 true-crime novel of the same name, also premieres this month. This limited series follows the investigation of Reena Virk’s disappearance –the fourteen-year-old left to meet some friends and never returned home. Starring Riley Keough and Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone, Under the Bridge has all the makings of a true-crime hit. Rounding out this month,...

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

Hulu has announced a very appropriate April 20 release date for a new unscripted series set in a Los Angeles marijuana dispensary that hails from executive producer Jimmy Kimmel.
High Hopes is a six-episode series described as a workplace reality series following brothers Slava and Mishka as they try to take their marijuana business to new heights with the help of a motley crue of red-eyed staffers.
The stoner siblings operate Mmd, which is one of the oldest marijuana dispensaries in Hollywood, but they’re trying to grow the business beyond its swanky storefront, as they want to expand nationwide as well as launch their own top-shelf line of cannabis products.
Kimmel partnered with ITV America to document all the fun — and the chaos — in the run-up to the dispensary’s biggest day of the year — 4/20. The talk show host executive produced High Hopes under his production company Kimmelot alongside Kimmelot president Scott Lonker,...

Exclusive: Fresh off success with the acclaimed docs Sly and Willie Nelson & Family, respectively chronicling the lives and careers of Sylvester Stallone and the iconic same-name country artist, Thom Zimny has signed with Artists First. Updated, with comment from Ramaswamy’s campaign: Eminem wants Vivek Ramaswamy to lose “Lose Yourself” and other rap works from his campaign’s playlist.
Music rights management service BMI sent Ramaswamy’s campaign a letter notifying them that Marshall Mathers, aka Eminem, had objected to their use of his compositions. (Read the Eminem letter). The BMI attorney, Pamela Williams, also informed them that the Eminem works are being removed from a BMI license agreement with the campaign.
“BMI will consider any performance of the Eminem Works by the Vivek 2024 campaign from this date forward to be a material breach of the Agreement for which BMI reserves all rights and remedies with respect thereto,” Williams wrote in the letter, which also was obtained by Deadline.
Ramaswamy drew huge attention for performing Eminem’s Oscar-winning 2002 hit “Lose Yourself” at the Iowa State Fair earlier this month.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
After the misfire that was The Amityville Haunting, I was worried that the so-called unofficial sequels in “the franchise” would all be absolute dreck. Obviously we’re grading on a scale when it comes to low budget Dtv films, but there’s still plenty of room for ingenuity and surprises regardless of funding.
Thankfully The Amityville Asylum, a 2013 UK production, represents something of a rebound. Writer/director Andrew Jones had abandoned found footage in favour of a more traditional approach to tell the story of Lisa Templeton (Sophia Del Pizzo), a young woman who interviews for a job as a night cleaner at the relatively new psychiatric institute, High Hopes.

We would still trust Andrea Zuckerman to edit a newspaper, but after watching Monday’s 9-1-1 premiere, we’d be less confident letting her pilot an aircraft.

And just like that, the 118 did what the 118 does, springing into action to rescue the pilots as well as the panicked crowd. Athena even got to fill in as a part-time heart surgeon, which is always a fun surprise.

U.K. director Mike Leigh directs films in a wide range of moods but his working-class dramas are what made his name. All or Nothing is an emotionally punishing story of everyday life on a lower rung of a stagnant economy, where nobody has dreams and pessimism is the order of the day. The bitterness and anger are most evident in the abusive attitudes and verbal brutality from one generation to the next, even with the caring, sensitive Penny (Lesley Manville) and the inoffensive Phil (Timothy Spall). Leigh’s players craft heartbreaking characters whose individual miseries can’t be dismissed. We invest heavily in the hope of a positive outcome even as everything we see says, ‘no.’ Yet the film’s honesty doesn’t want us to give up on these people.

Jon Gregory, editor of such films as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and In Bruges has died, a representative confirmed to Deadline. He was 77.
Gregory worked with Mike Leigh across the director’s storied career, from an early short called The Short & Curlies to one of Leigh’s first features, High Hopes, to some of the director’s best-known work — such as Life Is Sweet, Naked and Secrets & Lies — to one of his most recent works, Peterloo. Leigh remembered his frequent collaborator in a piece posted by The Guardian today.
In it, Leigh praised Gregory’s ability to compose complex component parts into a cohesive whole. “He brought to the task his unique characteristic skill, imagination, sensitivity and sophistication, while, as always, staying true to the material,” wrote the director. He praised Gregory’s sense of when not to edit, as well.

This article contains nothing but spoilers for Loki episode 1. We have a spoiler-free review here.
Marvel’s Loki episode 1 has finally arrived on Disney+! And in the grand scheme of things, this one is much closer to WandaVision than The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in terms of its tone, weirdness, and overall sense of mystery. The halls of the Tva are packed with obscure Marvel Comics lore and hints of what’s to come for the MCU, and we’re here to try and help you make sense of all of it.
The MCU and Loki Timeline
It’s appropriate that the first thing we see in Loki is a scene from Avengers: Endgame, the time-iest, wime-iest Marvel movie of them all (so far) and whose timeline branching/headache inducing time travel rules are crucial to the central concepts of Loki.

Exclusive: Ariel Winter (Modern Family) and Mason Gooding (Booksmart) have joined the cast of the indie feature Pools, which begins production in Chicago later this month.
They’ll star opposite previously announced cast members Odessa A’zion (Grand Army), Michael Vlamis and Tyler Alvarez (American Vandal).
Written and directed by Sam Hayes, Pools follows Kennedy (A’zion), who is stuck at summer school after flunking her sophomore year of college. Amidst a heat wave, she rallies a ragtag crew for a pool-hopping adventure through the wealthy estates of Lake Forest, on the north shore of Chicago. But as the secrets spill, a wild night of fun becomes a cathartic journey of self-discovery.
Winter will play Delaney, who is one to stir the pot, and becomes the focal point of a love triangle. The character plays tough and always knows how to win, but she really just wants her best friend back.

Now in it’s 2021 iteration, the RavensCourt/Voxler Let’s Sing franchise is now seemingly the only karaoke game left in a market that used to be completely saturated… Thankfully Let’s Sing 2021 is Still flying the flag for a genre that, only a few years ago was flourishing. So what happened? Well I blame TikTok… I joke of course, but as a super-fan of karaoke games I can’t understand why we can get a myriad of Need for Speed games no one wants, a ton of Assassin’s Creed titles that are – essentially – all the same game yet it’s the karaoke genre that’s dying out; a genre that can be revitalised every year given the right set of songs and the right game mechanics. Though judging by the traffic our reviews of Let’s Sing still get years after debuting, a Lot of other people love these game too!

How the 1940s standard “Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe” failed to be adapted into a Joe Biden campaign song until now is a mystery, but Cher recognized the obvious pairing of classic song and candidate and has recorded her rewrite of the tune, which was originally sung by Ethel Waters in the 1943 film “Cabin in the Sky.”
The song, with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg, was nominated for an Oscar after Waters sang it in the Black-themed Vincente Minnelli film. Many of the original lyrics would not do — Waters refers to “little Joe” in the film version, which sounds more like a nickname Donald Trump would apply to the candidate than something they’d want in a campaign anthem. So that reference gets changed to “president Joe” in Cher’s version, among other alterations.

One of the things that always impressed me about Bruce Springsteen is the melodic possibilities he can find in two-chord vamps. He doesn’t do it all the time, that would prove to be monotonous all night, but when he does it is a consistent affirmation of the power of rock and roll. It’s like he took every early inspiration which weaned him and plays their feel as if it were an instrument. Not the melodies, but what the melodies convey. The “stone and the gravel” in Springsteen’s voice may not be a suitable vehicle for the smooth vibratos of Drifters’ hits, but he never misses a note or what that note wants you to feel.
The new record is called Letter to You, and Springsteen’s weathered-through-rain-heat-and-gloom-of-night delivery consistently implies a range of additional tonic possibilities. And he’s got the band to back it up. His...

Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee are under fire for the use of another piece of music: Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
The singer-songwriter’s estate and Sony/Atv Publishing say that they specifically declined the Republican National Committee’s request for the song, but it was played anyway during the final night of the convention, as Trump delivered his acceptance speech from the South Lawn of the White House.
Michelle Rice, legal representative for Cohen’s estate, said in a statement that they were “surprised and dismayed” that the Rnc would use the song knowing they “had specifically declined the Rnc’s use request, and their rather brazen attempt to politicize and exploit in such an egregious manner ‘Hallelujah,’ one of the most important songs in the Cohen song catalogue.”
She said that they are exploring legal options but also got in a dig at the campaign.

Weed Shop has all the ingredients for a great web series-- a subculture-filled world of a medical marijuana shop in Los Angeles, a catchy theme song, a fun, animated web site, and free give-aways to viewers. Yet, the show still feels very much like a work in progress which also makes it surprisingly lovable. While the web series world is becoming a competitive breeding ground for possible TV and film deals (note, another web series about a medical marijuana shop entitled The Clinic is still in the works) it also still remains a great place to experiment. Let's face it, CBS, or any of the big three networks aren't likely to jump on a show set in a tenuous world of borderline legal drug dealing (that's what cable, and the Internet are for)! Although, a development exec probably would enjoy a chuckle when listening to Weed Shop's Executive Producer Michael...

Australian actor Russell Crowe is convinced his new movie Nottingham will be the best ever re-telling of the Robin Hood story - otherwise he wouldn't have signed up.
The Gladiator star takes on two roles in the film - playing the dashing hero as well as the villain, the Sheriff of Nottingham - alongside Sienna Miller as Maid Marion.
And Crowe admits that he initially turned the part down, then waited for movie bosses to produce a better script before he signed up.
He says, "The world doesn't need a mundane version of Robin Hood. If we're gonna do it, we've got to kick some serious butt. I've loved Robin Hood since I was a kid, but when the idea came up and they gave me this script, I said, 'Look, I don't like this. This doesn't work. It's not good enough.' So this has got to be the best one ever done, otherwise I should be doing something else."
And Crowe insists that the picture will remain true to the history of the legend, meaning he won't be donning the costume made famous by Robin Hood's many incarnations.
He adds, " I will not wear tights because according to our research they weren't invented for another 300 years. I apologise to you all - and to Sienna Miller."
The story of the English folk hero has been regularly adapted for the big screen over the last 100 years, with actors including Errol Flynn and Kevin Costner taking on the title role.

- It’s no secret that the Weinstein brothers Bob and Harvey have lost a bit of their golden sheen following their divorce from the House of Mouse, leaving behind their baby Miramax. With a string of critical and commercial failures including Grindhouse, Factory Girl, Miss Potter, and the like one has to question just how much solvency The Weinstein Company has in the current cinema landscape. With new media and adventurous production models coming to the fore, can an antiquated production house with an old-school studio head find any traction? The brothers W are certainly trying… all that’s missing is a signature picture that can represent the studio in the same way Pulp Fiction or The English Patient did for their old shingle. With Shanghai they just may have that movie. Directed by Mikael Hafstrom (1408) and written by Oscar-nominee Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove), Shanghai has
