Today, The Rolling Stones‘ debut album turned 60. Hats off to Mick Jagger and company for staying together this long against all odds! Here’s a look at their debut album’s triumphs and tragedies.
13. ‘I Just Want to Make Love to You’
The lively rhythm here is ruined by some questionable lyrics. In this song, Jagger compares himself to an enslaved person. It’s tasteless, but what would you expect from the same band that would later give us such racist atrocities as “Brown Sugar” and “Some Girls?” At least this song didn’t hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 like “Brown Sugar” did.
12. ‘You Can Make It If You Try’
Placed near the end of the album, “You Can Make It If You Try” is a self-empowerment song that feels tedious and endless. The Rolling Stones made it. They tried. This song didn’t help them get there.

Like every other Rolling Stones album dubbed the best since 1978’s Some Girls, Hackney Diamonds features enough cringey lyrics, dodgy guitar riffs, and self-plagiarism (such as Keith Richards playing “Tumbling Dice” at the beginning of “Driving Me Too Hard”) to keep it out of the pantheon of their greatest releases. What parts of the album do capture is a genuinely contemporary flair that the Stones haven’t successfully embodied since they triangulated the emerging threads of punk and disco back in the late 1970s.
The album’s crisp, booming drums, hooky choruses, and livewire vocals have a radio-ready sheen without feeling forced, or compromising the Stones’s essential traits. The opening track, “Angry,” hardens the edges around a shiny pop-forward hook with a hit of stadium swagger and a roiling outro that piles on knotty guitar solos from Richards and Ronnie Wood. The fact that the Stones don’t sound...

Not counting their blues covers record from 2016, the last time the Rolling Stones bequeathed us with an album of fresh material was during George W. Bush’s presidency. That record, 2006’s A Bigger Bang, was feisty but not especially memorable, and in the nearly two decades since, maybe even the Stones started to wonder if we needed another record by them. If they were going to drag themselves (and us) through the process again, and after such a long gap, they also must have known they’d have to make it worth everyone’s while.

The Rolling Stones have primarily stayed within the rock n’ roll genre, but there are a few times when they have veered off course. Fans were divided when the Stones released “Miss You” as a disco track, and many believed they were selling out. According to guitarist Keith Richards, the Rolling Stones almost went in an unexpected direction as one of their biggest hits was originally a “reggae” song.
Keith Richards said The Rolling Stones ‘Start Me Up’ was almost done as a ‘reggae’ song
Many rock bands found reggae music fascinating. It blends many different genres into an intriguing sound fused with Caribbean culture. Some bands attempted reggae, such as Led Zeppelin with “D’yer Mak’er”. According to Songfacts, Keith Richards said they tried to do a reggae song with “Start Me Up”.
The plan was to record “Start Me Up” as a reggae track and release it on their 1978 album Some Girls.

Some Girls is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. The Rolling Stones released the album in 1978, and it became one of their most successful records. Lead singer Mick Jagger fondly looked back on Some Girls and explained why it’s one of his favorite Rolling Stones albums decades later.
Mick Jagger believes ‘Some Girls’ is underrated, calls it one of his favorite albums
Some Girls was released in 1978 and was The Rolling Stones’ 16th album. The album had many highlights, including “Miss You,” “Beast of Burden,” and “Far Away Eyes.” While the album was a hit and received positive reviews, Jagger believes the album is “underrated.” In a 2011 interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, the singer explained why Some Girls is one of his favorite Rolling Stones albums.

It took The Rolling Stones a few years to find their footing in England’s busy 1960s music scene. Once they did, they released a string of successful albums that became all-time classics. After a lull in the mid-1970s, The Rolling Stones returned to glory with Some Girls, a record that singer Mick Jagger rated as one of his favorite records by the band.

The Rolling Stones did cause controversy regarding some of their lyrics or themes. However, one song garnered issue from their audience over the genre they chose to cover. Looking back on it, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have no regrets over this song and find the controversy surrounding it to be “ridiculous.”
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards think the controversy regarding ‘Miss You’ is unfounded
“Miss You” was released in 1978 as the first single for The Rolling Stones album Some Girls. While the song was a hit, it was divisive with fans of the Stones at that time. The track saw the Stones taking on the disco genre, which grew in popularity during the 1970s. Many hated the track and felt the band was selling out by moving away from their rock n’ roll roots.

Rolling Stones lead guitarist Keith Richards has always spoken his mind. He said The Who singer Roger Daltry was all flash and that the band’s drummer Keith Moon was a hopeless performer with any other group. He has never cared if his words offend, even if they alienate his audience. Richards said a certain group of fans pissed him off when they criticized the Stones’ album Some Girls and the song “Miss You.”
Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards | George Rose/Getty Images Keith Richards was pissed off with purists who called The Rolling Stones sellouts over ‘Some Girls’
The Rolling Stones practically created the blueprint for edgy, boozy, blues-based hard rock. They reached their apex between 1968 and 1973. Their five albums — Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main St., and Goats Head Soup — produced a slew of glowing reviews and signature songs.
Understandably, the band’s pace slowed down after that.

What is considered the best Rolling Stones album? It’s a fair question, and there are plenty to choose from. Would it be one of the classics the band strung together in the 1960s and 1970s? Would it be one of the albums that peaked at No. 2 despite housing incredible songs? Or one of the many compilations stacked with hits (and some of the band’s controversial songs)? Best is subjective, but we know which of the nine Rolling Stones albums to reach No. 1 were the most commercially successful of the group’s records (thanks to some help from Billboard’s meticulous record-keeping).
Note: We used the time spent at No. 1 as the benchmark of success. We broke the ties in the middle of the pack by looking at duration on the charts.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, it’s hard to argue The Rolling Stones aren’t one of the most popular bands ever. Paul McCartney claimed George Harrison got the Stones their recording contract, but whether or not that’s true doesn’t matter. They made the most of their opportunity and created several seminal albums along the way. They also found success on the Billboard singles chart. Eight Rolling Stones songs reached No. 1, but some ranked higher than others.
Note: We ranked The Rolling Stones’ eight No. 1 hits based on weeks atop the Billboard singles chart and total weeks on the chart. The only place we had to make an editorial decision was at the No. 4 spot.

One of The Rolling Stones’ most heartfelt ballads was also one of their chart-topping hits.

Many of The Rolling Stones‘ songs reached No. 1 in the United States. Despite this, many of their most famous tracks didn’t reach that milestone. In the same vein, their longest-charting single only reached No. 2.
The Rolling Stones | William Lovelace / Stringer 5. ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’
There’s a reason there’s an action movie named after The Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”: it’s one of the band’s best and most energetic songs. It’s a pure shot of 1960s rock ‘n’ roll adrenaline. The over-the-top lyrics (“I was born in a crossfire hurricane / And I howled at the morning drivin’ rain”) would sound patently ridiculous if they weren’t coupled with such amazing guitar work.
This classic only reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. According to The Billboard Book of Number 1 Hits, it was kept off the top spot by two songs: “Grazing in the Grass” by Hugh Masekela...

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

In 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, the rock-obsessed duo played by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves worship Eddie Van Halen and fantasize that one day he’ll join the band. In real life, the film’s writers hoped to cast the guitar god as a major role in the movie. We spoke to Alex Winter about the moment he discovered Van Halen as a teenager and the impact he had on the film series.
My awakening to Van Halen came in ‘78. I had moved to New York City from the Midwest.

Last summer, Jameson Rodgers was on the road opening for Luke Combs. This week he’s singing with the country superstar on a new collaboration, Rodgers’ ode to chilling out “Cold Beer Calling My Name.” It’s a natural fit, considering one of Combs’ signature hits is titled “Beer Never Broke My Heart” (the pair are also friends).
Opening with some jagged guitars that call to mind Jason Aldean more than the Nineties vibes of Combs, “Cold Beer Calling My Name” finds Rodgers singing about driving fast into an endless night.

Kim Shattuck, the singer and guitarist who co-founded and led the SoCal punk band the Muffs alongside contributions to Pixies and Nofx, died Wednesday at the age of 56. A rep for Shattuck’s band the Coolies confirmed her death to Rolling Stone. The cause was amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als).
“We are very sorry to announce the passing of our bandmate and dear friend Kim Shattuck,” the Muffs’ Ronnie Barnett and Roy McDonald wrote on Facebook. “Besides being a brilliant songwriter, rocking guitarist and singer/screamer extraordinaire, Kim was a true force of nature.

A familiar face on British stage and television shows like Doll & Em, Some Girls, and frequent collaborations with The Mighty Boosh’s Noel Fielding, Dolly Wells takes a dramatic turn in Can You Ever Forgive Me? Playing the bookish romantic interest of forger Lee Israel, opposite fellow funny lady, Melissa McCarthy, Ms. Wells chatted with Lmd exclusively about creating on-screen chemistry, the “funny bones” she inherited from her actor/writer father, John Wells, and taking the helm of her own feature directing debut. The Lady Miz Diva: Your character, Anna, is kind of mysterious to me. What did you make of her when you read her? Dolly Wells: I thought she was like somebody with like, a few less layers of skin than...

British police have had to issue a tongue-in-cheek statement confirming that they have ruled out actor David Schwimmer as a suspect in a theft case after posting a “wanted” picture of someone who bore a striking resemblance to the “Friends” star.
Social media users took to Twitter and Facebook in droves after the original picture was posted on the Blackpool Police’s Facebook page on Tuesday. The force said they wanted to speak to the unidentified man about a theft at a local restaurant. “Do you recognise this man?” the post asked. Many people thought they did, or at least spied a resemblance.
The post has now received 124,000 comments, and counting. “I don’t think it’s been this guy’s day, his week, his month or even his year,” one person wrote – part of the deluge of “Friends” references and Ross quotes. “The one where Ross steals beer,” someone else snickered.

James Bay warmed up the crowd at London’s Twickenham Stadium before The Rolling Stones took the stage last night. But after Bay’s opening set, Stones frontman Mick Jagger invited him back onstage to perform a duet of the band’s hit “Beast of Burden.” The song, originally from 1978’s “Some Girls” album, saw a second life in 1984 when it became a radio and MTV hit for Bette Midler.
Before the show started, Keith Richards chatted with Bay and showed the singer some of his pre-show rituals.
After the performance, Bay took to Instagram to thank The Rolling Stones, citing the impact and influence the band has had on his career thus far. “This band has probably shaped the way I make music and perform more than anyone else,” Bay wrote. “Their relentless passion and energy on stage is so inspiring. I can’t believe last night was real.

“All the films in this book share an air of disreputability… I have tried to avoid using the word art about the movies in this book, not just because I didn’t want to inflate my claims for them, but because the word is used far too often to shut down discussion rather than open it up. If something has been acclaimed as art, it’s not just beyond criticism but often seen as above the mere mortals for whom its presumably been made. It’s a sealed artifact that offers no way in. It is as much a lie to claim we can be moved only by what has been given the imprimatur of art as it would be to deny that there are, in these scruffy movies, the very things we expect from art: avenues into human emotion and psychology, or into the character and texture of the time the films were made,...

Having to choose a favorite handsome costar between Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson is no easy task — they’re both ripped, hilarious and talented — but Baywatch leading ladies Ilfenesh Hadera and Kelly Rohrbach had no trouble revealing a few fun facts about working with the two movie stars.
When asked which of the two actors made everyone laugh most on set, Rohrbach tells People Now that Efron and Johnson are funny in different ways, and that they usually work as a team to crack a joke.
“Dwayne comes in with the one-liners, and Zac is more of the prankster,” she says.

Since saying “Bye, Bye, Bye” in 2002, Justin Timberlake, Jc Chasez, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick have each built careers for themselves outside of ‘Nsync — the blockbuster boyband that brought them worldwide fame in the ’90s.
Though there aren’t plans for the group to get back together and make music any time soon, they’re still good friends — reuniting most recently in August for Chasez’s 40th birthday bash.
“The guys spent the entire night together,” a source told People at the time. “They all sat in a group and just reunited, relived and had such a ball.

In Only Child, Santiago Palavecino takes an oft-filmed, still significant subject -- the children of the "disappeared" men and women of the Argentinian dictatorships -- and ambitiously gives it the kind of radically personal stylistic twist which is all-too easily labeled "pretentious." And in stretches, it is indeed just that -- but in other stretches it’s intriguing, in others baffling, in others potent and in others striking. What this artistically bolder follow-up to Some Girls never quite achieves, largely because of sometimes bewildering flashbacks and ellipses, is full coherence.

There are different themes and moods associated with each season that, aside from the weather, make them remarkably different from one another. Summer in particular is associated with vitality, energy, and joy, while winter, in contrast, is most linked to death, lethargy, and hopelessness. These seasonal moods extend to all aspects of pop culture like movies and music too. Albums like 808s and Heartbreak, Reflektor, and Led Zeppelin IV are clearly winter albums, while Some Girls, True Blue, and Californication are without question summer albums.
Even comic books reflect this trend as some are more fit for particular seasons or times of the day than others. Some comics like Daredevil and Batman are nighttime books, while Superman and Amazing Spider-Man are daytime books. Batman Red Rain should be read around Halloween, while The Ultimates and The Ultimates 2 are the comic book equivalent of summer blockbusters. Below is my list of...

Legendary country star Merle Haggard died Wednesday on his 79th birthday, a coincidence that wouldn't seem out of place in one of Haggard's many indispensable contributions to country music. But Haggard didn't just pen hits like "Okie from Muskogee," "Sing Me Back Home" and "Mama Tried." He fundamentally altered the course of country music on a granular level, introducing a sonic blueprint that would come to be known as "the Bakersfield sound," a rough-hewn counterpoint to the sweeter sounds coming out of Nashville at the same time. Born in Bakersfield, California, to Dust Bowl migrants from Oklahoma, Haggard spent large...

A medium-height, slightly nervous, shy-seeming, fast-talking man, Gaspar Noé doesn’t really announce himself as the formally audacious director behind some of this millennium’s most assaultive and, speaking broadly, extreme narrative films. Perhaps that (altogether friendly) personality more clearly befits his latest film, Love. What’s been referred to for the years of its development as a “3D porn movie,” but hews closer to Last Tango in Paris or The Mother and the Whore: a slow, sad, and only intermittently confrontational picture that mostly uses its format as a tool for rendering spaces and memories more immediate. The inevitably downbeat ending, communicated early, lends the sex an uncomfortable air — one where even 3D cum shots carry a certain sort of melancholy.
Despite his work’s general reliance on images over words, Noé is a very verbose artist, taking a question about one thing and providing an answer about two others.

Bad Boys 3, billed as Bad Boys for Life, will see Will Smith and Martin Lawrence back together in January 2020.
Bad Boys 3 or Bad Boys for Life, has been, up until now, a long-kept secret. The difficulty, as producer Jerry Bruckheimer said back in summer 2013, centered on the task of reuniting its duo headlining personnel. Back then, he was "trying to find a hole in Will Smith's schedule."
Having finally overcome dilatory issues, the long-awaited threequel revives the popular buddy cop film franchise of 1995's Bad Boys and 2003's Bad Boys II, both of which were directed by Michael Bay. While he ultimately dropped out of directing the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence revival vehicle, he would be replaced by a duo of up-and-comers in Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.

It doesn’t matter what kind of girl you are: a girlie-girl, a tomboy, a lover of rock music, a girl with tattoos, a girl with rainbow hair. When your body clock decides it’s time, well, it’s time, and that’s just the end of it.
You’ve decided you want a baby.
Some girls grow up knowing their main goal in life is to eventually become a mother. Didn’t you have friends at school who constantly reeled off lists of their favourite boys and girls names, who had siblings and cousins with their own babies which meant their whole lives were full of babies? Didn’t you used to think you’d never be one of those girls who devoted their time to wanting a child? You were sure you’d be ambitious, a career lady, an independent female off gallivanting around the world exploring unknown places.

If wedding bouquet-catching were an Olympic sport, a special spot would be reserved for Jamie Jackson at the top of the podium. The 37-year-old Salt Lake City, Utah, woman has been to more than 80 weddings, catching the bridal bouquet a record 46 times, edging out other single women in the room like a defensive back intercepting a touchdown pass. The irony, of course, is that Jackson is still single. "I've pretty much crushed that 'next-to-be-married' myth," she tells People. "I've had boyfriends, sure. But I'm liking the single life. Besides, if I were married, I'd have to give up my favorite sport.
