fun, but bring your sense of humor
rduchmann9 June 2000
Sometimes described as "British," this is an NY-made film adapting the Victorian porn novel A MAN WITH A MAID. Seducer Jack, whose basement is rigged with incredible set of snares and boobytraps and bondage devices, lures young women into the same and forces them into sex action they are (natch) really anxious to experience. Various restraints are used, and the atmosphere is N/C, but dialogue is so goofy, performances broad enough, and the Gilbert & Sullivan soundtrack so inapropos that it is quite amusing, except to those persons who take sex altogether too seriously.

Jack's first victim is his fiancee Alice, who is a nice girl and doesn't do that sort of thing before she's married. She's played by lovely Susan Sloane, a very modestly-built brunette who is somewhat a cult figure among 32nd degree porn fans. Jack's awed reference to "The Himalayas!" upon denuding her is a hoot. And of course, once she's had some, she wants more (feminists may exit by the side door). Next, Jack tackles Molly, Alice's maid, and Alice helps out. With both women initiated, Jack's attention turns to the snooty social-climber Lady Bunt (Sarah Nicholson, aka Jennifer Jordan), and she and her lanky, hairy-pits teen daughter Cicely soon find themselves in Jack's dungeon. However, Jack has gone too far, as Alice advises us in a prim voiceover, and it is time to teach him a lesson. Suffice it to say that one is taught.

Tech credits are good, and the film has a professional look although shot about 95% in one basement set. All the actors simulate British accents, at least as acceptably as in the average college dramatic production. Most of the femmes remind me of college girl actresses of that period (among whom I had some acquaintance). Note that this 85 min film has no more than about 7 min, if that much, of actual explicit sex in its running time. Most of it is on the level of a very slick and clever nudie cutie, though with better acting. Sloane and Barrett each racked up a handful of credits in NY porn films of c1974/5; Nicholson worked from c1974-c1981, with dozens of appearances. I never saw Heather Austin (also credited as Brown), who plays Cicely in anything else. Leading man Beerbohm Tree has obvious professional credentials.

Potentially distasteful subject matter is turned into neat comedy by inspired direction and performances. It will be altogether too slow and nonexplicit for many porn fans, but I give it a 7 and recommend it highly to non-raincoaters.

A Genuinely Erotic Satire from the Chic Era
russbgrant5 August 2020
One of the classier pictures coming from the porno chic era is an adaptation of a novel about Jack, a very naughty Victorian who has an elaborate "snuggle" room full of contraptions that he uses on the unsuspecting fiance Alice, who he claims to be a prick tease. This one is more light bondage than hardcore adult, and it does a great job in actually being erotic. The opening scene takes its time to go through the paces, lingering on every detail which is a great setup for the things to come. Susan Sloan and Beerbohm Tree are both legit great as the leads, and they really carry the film. Add in some really good production quality to make New York look like England with a large side of humour and this one is a genuine winner. Some may be turned off by it's slower, closer to softcore at points, pace but if you accept is an erotic story instead of a typical hardcore porn, you should get something out of it.

Best...porn....EVAR

Artful, funny, just plain sexy. One thing I remember clearly, the credits list the lead actor who plays Jack as Beerbohm Tree, who was a famous actor in Victorian England (and the illegitimate grandfather of the late Oliver Reed!). This is but one of the various verbal, visual, and musical puns that are set up with great success in the film. The final scene, set to "Punishment Fit the Crime" is truly memorable! The set design, attractive cast, and G&S soundtrack combine to make this a gem in an otherwise unremarkable era for "erotica." I also remember that it was the most unpopular movie we showed at the drive-in porn theatre I worked out in the late 70's, and that alone attests to its higher level of intelligence! Love to know if anyone knows how to get a copy of this in any format!

Entertaining For All The Wrong (or Right?) Reasons

The Naughty Victorians: An Erotic Tale of a Maiden's Revenge (1975)

*** (out of 4)

Alice (Susan Sloan) goes to live with her fiance Jack (Beerbohn Tree) and soon realizes that he has some strange ideas about sex and bondage. Before long more women are coming into the bizarre sex game but Alice has her own plans.

THE NAUGHTY VICTORIANS: AN EROTIC TALE OF A MAIDEN'S REVENGE is a very unusual movie and I'd highly recommend you read Roger Ebert's review of the film. In fact, as I read various reviews it became quite clear that some loved the picture while others truly hated it and those who hated it talked about the awful dialogue, the rather strange performances and the fact that this "hardcore" movie doesn't have too much hardcore.

Those reasons for hating the film are quite legit and I honestly wouldn't argue with anyone who didn't like the movie but what's strange is the fact that I liked the film for those exact reasons. Yes, there's not too much hardcore sex in the picture and a lot of it is more suggestive than anything else yet that gave the film a rather unique style. The opening sex scene takes forever to get to it and yet it plays as a major tease. I can understand people going into the film wanting wall-to-wall sex and being disappointed that the first sex scene takes forever to get it but at the same time it's different and unique.

Both Sloan and Tree are, I don't know the word, perhaps off-key? Their performances aren't great and they aren't awful but they're just something strange. The strangeness actually worked for me and I had a good time watching them. Their dialogue is even stranger and it really does seem on the level of Edward D. Wood, Jr. at times but it was fun. Mix this dialogue with the performances and the incredibly strange bondage scenes and you've got a rather fun little film. And did I forget to mention the mother-daughter scene?
