Good, but not my favourite out of all the shows
bazmitch239 October 2013
When I first saw this show years ago, I didn't really like it. I thought the toilet jokes, fart jokes, penis jokes and innuendos were tiresome. Also most of it was Rik and Ade ad-libbing and going off script. Also we have to look at Richie's poo covered back throughout the whole first act.

All that stuff was probably hysterical back in 97, today not so much.

But when years passed, I thought "Maybe I've been too hard on this show." So, I decided to give it another chance and bought it on DVD. I liked it a lot more this time.

I liked the scene where Richie eats the bad fish and vomits. And the vomit is just steam. The more faker it looks, the more funnier it is. And you can see the hose Rik is holding onto when he is going to vomit on the cannibals. (They later used the bad fish plot in Guest House Paradiso, which I disliked. Despite the movie having a few funny moments though.)

My favourite scene is when they're talking about how they got on the island in the first place. I thought Richie's Ecstasy dance was funny. Also, I liked how you picture the incident in your head when they're talking about it.

I loved the set. In the credits, it said Rik and Ade designed it. They probably designed it when they were writing the script to see what scenes they could create. Out of the sets in the live shows, this is my favourite.

It may have it's flaws mentioned above, it's still enjoyable.

Warning: Spoilers
I think my favorite part of this show was seeing the duo ad-lib when they went off-script + flubbed lines, prop placement, etc.

Spoiler alert: the part with the door swinging open unexpectedly + Rik's reaction, for instance, made this video for me. In all fairness, I am a big fan of the Bottom series. So, I might just be in love with Eddie + Richie to the point where they can do no comedic wrong in my eyes.

Also, I didn't watch the first two Bottom Live specials yet. Mostly because I just gravitated to this (the 3rd), the 4th, + the 5th live shows based on their titillating titles. Either way, I enjoyed this. Three thumbs up.

Oh, wait...that's not a thumb.

''We've got a plot this year, have we?''
Rabical-916 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
'Bottom' ended its final series on BBC2 in February 1995. Two and a half years later, Rik and Ade returned as Richie and Eddie for their third stage outing - 'Bottom Live 3: Hooligan's Island' - filmed at The Brisol Hippodrome. It took the two from their normal setting in their grotty flat to a remote desert island somewhere in the pacific. In my opinion, 'Hooligan's Island' was the weakest of all the 'Bottom' stage shows. Though it was funny, something was lacking. I cannot quite put my finger on it.

'Hooligan's Island' sees Richie and Eddie struggling to survive against ordeals such as food poisoning and encounters with cannibals. Amidst all this chaos, Richie and Eddie manage to keep themselves amused with a heavy dose of violence, boozing, swearing, vomiting and farting.

The second half of the show sees Richie and Eddie accidentally triggering off a gigantic nuclear bomb that has been dumped on their island by a Frenchman ( was this inspired by the 'Bomb' episode of 'The Young Ones', do you think? ), which then takes both their lives at the end of the show when it blows up ( Richie and Eddie really should have made The Guinness World Records. After all, how many people can say they have been blown up three times and then miraculously come back to life? ).

'Hooligan's Island', whilst not bad, is not as good as the first two shows. Whilst the idea of marooning Richie and Eddie on an island was certainly a neat one, I think the main problem is really that there is not enough consistently funny gags to sufficiently fill the show. Someone out there must have liked it though as in 1999, Rik and Ade then moved Richie and Eddie to the cinema screen for their hilarious feature film 'Guest House Paradiso', in which Richie and Eddie ran a disgusting hotel of the same name. A VHS tape was released the same year entitled 'Big Bottom Live' which was a mockumentary featuring clips of the three live shows made thus far interspersed with interviews with Richie and Eddie's neighbours and friends ( which included the local off-licence proprietor, the local sex-shop owner and their cleaning lady among others ). It would not be until 2001 that a fourth live show was made which in this case was 'Bottom Live 2001: An Arse Oddity'.

A good enough romp for fans of Rik and Ade but it still could have been better. In 2013, Rik and Ade planned to use the 'Hooligan's Island' setting for a revival of 'Bottom' but alas it did not happen.

Funniest bit - the look and sound of dread from Eddie as the passing 'albatross' shits right on his head.

Second funniest bit - Richie burping and farting copiously on account of the fish he has just consumed being so toxic. He even farts right in Eddie's face!

Rib-cracking beat'em-up with the odder couple . . .
PROFESSOR X21 May 2000
Richard Richard & Edward Elizabeth Hitler (Rik Mayall & Ade Edmondson) find themselves stranded on a desert-island, after stowing away upon a ferry to escape the ol'bill. However, things are slightly marred by the fact that they hate each other and that there's a nuclear bomb to keep them company. And as this 'Bottom', they will fight, squabble, kick and fart through the funniest 90 minutes of your life. And that's official. The two stars work their socks off to produce a rib-tickling, side-splitting, groin-clutching play, that happens to be their third stage performance of these characters. If you've ever watched the BBC TV sitcom, set in a muck-ridden flat, then you'll know what's coming - swearing, fighting, farting, more knob-gags than a Carry on. But, if you haven't then this an absolute must! Although more sensitive viewers beware: They is extreme swearing and agonising violence. But it's all in a good nature . . .

Amazingly funny!

I have only high praises for this show. 110% pure entertainment with top of the line punch lines. I only regret not being there to see it live. If you love'em two goofballs, buy this show and watch it 253 times. If you hate'em, go down to your local Blockbuster outlet and rent it. When returning the show, pick up one copy on your way back!

These get better

Warning: Spoilers
I disagree what an Aussie bloke put on there about "dont bother" with this one. If he had said it about A**e Odesy and Weapons Grade Y Fronts i could understand as there is repeated things in them.

This one is brilliant and, again, a new theme. The lads are stuck on a Pacific Island somewhere near Bristol with the comforts of a WW2 Japanese shelter which Richie doesn't know about. (Of course stocked with their delights - I'm not saying too much, watch it!) The go through all sorts of disasters from bird pooing to many general fights. They spend the second half with a huge French nuclear bomb which adds to the humour. (dont think i can list it all, spoil it and I'm sure someone will be offended for someone else).

These stage shows are fantastic. Its a big shame they aren't planning anymore as they continue to be great. Buy the DVD, Video and watch it and you'll love it.

Always brings a smile to my face!!!
Bon_Jovi_chick26 October 2003
I've been a fan of BOTTOM and YOUNG ONES for years, since I was 11 to be exact (Im 20 now!!) and I hadnt seen nothing until I saw the BOTTOM LIVE videos!!!!

For this one, we go far far away from the lovely flat in Hammersmith and to a desert island where Rik and Ade are making the most of being stranded!!! This one tops both the first and second one.

The seagull- "Watch it circle, watch it loop de loop, watch it get the prop man sacked!!" cracks me up EVERYTIME. The Disney impersonations, the "bird" the "Nuclear Bombe" (s**t its all in French!!)- these guys pull it off gracefully and get through the mistakes and rik's constant giggling!!!!

We get the audience shouting "Have a w**k!!) but unlike the first two videos, the reply is brought on more gracefully. Watch out for the story on how Rik and Ade came to be on the island, like their rubbish magic trick tales, Rik's ecstasy dance........ it all brings a smile to my face

And people wonder why I'm insane!

Go.....see....now!!!!

Rik and Ade's best live show ever
flensborg8212 January 2005
In my opinion Bottom Live 3 is the best live show Rik and Ade has made. It contains the usual fart jokes and random violence that we all love, and the punch lines (and the f**k-ups) made me laugh harder than any of the other Bottom live shows did. It also seemed to me that they had a better storyline for this show than any of the others - they nearly had a plot :D This live show is set on an island, they later find out they share with a nuclear bomb. What happens before and after the discovery of a nuclear bomb i will leave unsaid, but i will say that it's hysterically funny! This is really a show worth seeing, especially if you like the Bottom series or just any kind of vulgar, disgusting humor. I give it a 10/10

they never cease to make me laugh
Mmyers200330 October 2002
This is pure brilliance yet again from the boys and its definately an improvement on number 2 (which was good but the weakest one of the 4). Rik and Ade still get the laughs they want and still use good solid jokes in the show. Weldone Rik and Ade. 12 out of 10

Funny is not the word, a word is to be invented on how funny this is!
inner25 November 2001
Rik Mayall Adrian Edmoundson The most funny men that ever lived. This is set on an island an original idea for bottom. Usally it is set in their flat. You will laugh your head off from start to finish. Just th relasionship between the two is as good as LAURAL AND HARDY AND MORCOME AND WISE. The only bad thing about this is that Rik Mayall is slightly over the top.

this is the third best bottom live. 1. Bottom live: 2001 an arse oddity (Which i have seen live) 2. Bottom live 2 the big number 2 tour 3. Bottom live 3 Hooligans island 4. Bottom live If you are feeling un happy put this on this is sure to cheer you up.

10 out of 10 and so goes for the rest of the live shows.

God bless you for reading

Don't bother with this one
nicholas_blackmore19 September 2000
Let me say first: I am a big fan of Ade and Rik, from Kevin Turvey through the Young Ones through Bottom. But this particular video is not a good example of their superb sense of humour.

Bottom, for the uninitiated, is all about slapstick, fart jokes and the tragic sadness of two complete losers. Think the Young Ones but more so. At its best, it is hilarious. This is not its best.

It's hard to explain why not, it just isn't. Not all bum jokes are equal, shall we say. They can be clever, unexpected and almost Wilde-esque, or they can be dreadfully obvious and overdone. More to the point, this video relies so much on them, as opposed to the witty repartee, random violence and sexual innuendo of the rest of the Bottom works.

If you want to see Bottom at its best, avoid this one and hire the Bottom Live 1 or watch the tv series.
