Warning: Spoilers
It is well known that Les Dawson based one of his famous female characters on Norman Evans act in "Over The Garden wall".When Evans goes through his famous act you can almost hear it word for word in your mind coming out of the mouth of Les.Jimmy James was one of the legendary drunk acts ,although I believe that he was teetotal. He was extremely funny and comes out to good advantage in this film. The only problem is that at 93minutes this film is overlong. That is because of the rather pointless subplot involving the married daughter,Sonya O Shea, who has come back to visit with her American husband. What is even sillier is she sounds as if she has just walked out of a Mayfair night club rather than a Lancashire home. Her former flame tries to entice her to remain with him,and she hardly gives him any discouragement. However it turns out that he has put his current lover in the family way, which in those days was the quick step to marriage. My advice is to fast forward when James and Evans aren't on screen.
