80's FAD
caspian197813 January 2005
Yes, there are moments of this video / game that are awful for today's standards, but who cares. This giant FAD that was a hit in the 80s' could have been found in many households in America. The new wave / FAD of having a video type board game where the mystery of the murder enters your living room and it up to your family to solve was a giant success. Almost as interesting is that many if not all the actors involved in the movie did not go on to make any more films. A sequel game was produced years later but did not have the same success as the original. At times funny and sometimes off the wall, the Clue video / game was far from terrible. It was a one hit wonder that is worthy of the respect that it deserves.

I was not winking ... I was blinking!

Ok ... the game itself was hot garbage. Not a bad idea, just horrible execution. But the video ... oh man ... So good! Not GOOD good, BAD good ... But SO bad good!! It's been 33 years or so since I've seen it, but I can still remember some great lines from it ... Mrs. White: "GYPSIES! GYPSIES CAME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AND STOLE MY BAAAAABY!" ... (Green and Plum handing out blackmail letters): "No checks ... no credit cards!" Miss Scarlet: "I was never IN Sumatra ..." If you haven;t seen it, search it out on Youtube, it's worth a view!

The game is just OK; the video is priceless!

Reviewers who refer to the video that comes with this game as lame or awful really don't get it unless they are speaking tongue-in-cheek. The video is so wonderfully, horribly bad that it will not only keep you in stitches while you're watching, you'll be quoting the script for years.

Another reviewer likened it to the film, "Murder by Death". That is 100% accurate. If you liked that movie, you'll truly enjoy the video that comes with this game.

It's so much better than the film that was based on CLUE, the board game; in fact, it's what the movie SHOULD have been. The script is alternately witty, corny, silly and just plain fun. If you are lucky enough to still own a VCR, you won't be sorry you saw this. My daughter was very young when we owned this game and video. She's now a 32 year old wife and mother and we STILL quote lines from the video and crack up with laughter! In fact, forget the game, just watch the video.

its just fun

Watching this video while trying to play the game is annoying and too complicated, and you're likely to end up getting mad and tossing the entire set out, or selling it on e-bay. But--it's not nearly as bad as it may seem, if viewed as a cheesy movie, disregarding the game. (In other words, don't throw EVERYTHING out, just the game part--keep the video!!) The cast works great together, and it really is funny to watch. Another user said that you will be reciting lines for months, and I agree. I was drawn to the cheesiness of the video, and found myself enjoying it--even laughing out loud. The characters of Colonel Mustard, Madam Rose, and Miss Scarlet are particularly funny, but all the others are great--working together, the MAKE the video. Excellent ensemble work. If you want to have some plain fun entertainment, pop in the video and enjoy. Also, check out Clue II: Murder in Disguise--another cheesy, fun video with the same chemistry-charged cast.

shows why vcr gaming never caught on
olddave21 March 1999
In the mid-1980's, as VCR's were becoming standard equipment, some folks thought they might be a great vehicle for gaming as well. That was the mission of this title, a revved-up version of the popular Parker Bros. board game. The result, is one of the most wonderfully horrible videos ever produced. It is a joy to watch the credits and see just how many people were assembled to make such a mistake. The opening "how to play" sequence is amusing in its complexity, and the simplicity with which it is described by the program's host. The audience will quickly recognize that the game is hardly playable as they shuffle their black suspect cards with their red, blue, and green clue cards and a few other cards in the compartmentalized tray with included viewfinder and detective casebook. That said, Walter Covell makes the film as the mutton-chopped Colonel Mustard with a fondness for hunting and pizza. In fact, his exclamation "Pizza!" is the film's most memorable moment, it is beautifully overdone. Miss Peach is the film's seductive southern belle, too bad she's very nasty and apparently very cold. It is a game filled with glaring errors, Colonel Mustard spilling soup on himself, and visible string holding up the candles. My god, I've seen it too many times. Get it, at once, but don't attempt to play the game, just have some pizza!

Pure comedy
birchbabe024 December 2005
This film had me crying with laughter, it really is pure comedy. It is not a well known film and people i comment to about it are not at all familiar with it, but i always encourage to watch and have pleasure in promoting it. It totally satisfies my sense of humour and would recommend it 100%. I first saw this film at the age of 9 and was taken by it straight away. As i got older i failed to find it a t local video rentals so found a copy to purchase on the web which i was totally overjoyed by so i can now watch it time and time again. It is a shame that this film has not been more appreciated. Tim curry plays an excellent 'baddy' character, who leads the film throughout.

A lot of fun
StreepFan12625 April 2002
This was a lot of fun! It was kind of confusing at some points though,a ! Definatly not a game for the non-observant. Pay attention to detail, if you ever play this! Acting is good, as well as the various stories and mysteries.

Campy but amusing

I loved this game when I was invited to play it at a friend's house years ago. Actually, more than a game, I really enjoyed the video story itself and after watching the three story chapters it left me wanting more. Luckily, my wish was granted when two years later the same cast was back for the video sequel, "Clue II: Murder in Disguise."

My favorite of the suspects is Miss Scarlet, played by the beautiful Janet Wong as the epitome of mysterious Dragon Ladies. The character of Ling on Ally McBeal, played by Lucy Liu, could be Miss Scarlet's cousin. My favorites after Janet Wong are Walter Covell's monocled Colonel Mustard and Barry Doe's Mr. Lyman Green, although I enjoyed the work of the whole cast.

This VCR game came out the same time as the Hollywood Clue movie which is no where near as true to the Clue characters as in this video. People who like Neil Simon's "Murder By Death" might get a kick

An inane game but with a cult following
profplum2410 December 1999
I kind of liked playing this game, although none of my friends could either understand it or like it. The great thing about this video, though, is the video itself. It is, in one word, hilarious! The producers, director, and actor knew that they were making a two-bit story for a silly game and totally ran with it.

I first got this game when it first came out (on Beta!) and I watched it constantly, and even have the whole thing memorized. The story is unrealistic and twisted and the characters are very stereotypical, but it's jolly good fun!

Watch it with your friends and you'll be quoting lines from it for months!

For those who want more, try watching "Clue II: Murder in Disguise," which is a little less funny because they're trying too hard but still a great time.

loved to watch not play
borntobesting8 March 2003
We got this game as well as the first clue movie game. They were more fun to watch than play. The acting while maybe not first rate was pretty good. We watched the movie so often that my youngest daughter could almost recite every scene. Especially the "Gypsies gypsies came in the middle of the night and stole our baby" bit. As stated earlier by someone it is a difficult game if your not observant but for us the fun was in the watching not the playing

Whatever, get over it! It's fine!
TributeToBob19 September 2004
This game is really fun for people who are observant or just like a good mystery. These people that are saying "two-bit dinner theatre" actors populate the video have probably never acted a day in their life. Anyway, back on topic, this is really cool. Try and find it on Ebay or something. My version is a hand-me-down from my parents.

Check it out for a laugh and some fun.

The actors are OK, nothing Oscar-worthy.

Again, check it out!

(I'm typing to take up space.)

I agree with the last person!
Apostle19 August 2000
Although I think the game is fun to play, I agree with the last person who wrote in saying how bad the video was. A bunch of two-bit dinner theater rejects try and make the game enjoyable and they succeed. Unfortunatley, they succeeded in making the movie laughable rather than suspenseful. Mr. Green's phony New York type accent (not to mention M. Brunette's French accent) are laughable. Miss Peach and Ms. Scarlett are hot, but I can't get over how cheesy they are!
