A curio short that is interesting for its style but disappointing for its substance

A young professional couple find their time together nothing more than sharing a flat as work robs them of their energy and their time. However at night when they sleep, their spirits rise up and cavort lovingly around the flat.

Told in the style of an old silent movie, this film overacts accordingly within a simple story. Of course this isn't really a criticism since this is the style it is trying to emulate. As such the ghostly animation is reasonably effective although I thought the step into the computer screen was unnecessary and did fell like it was done because, effects wise, they could do it rather than doing it because it was an idea and an important part of the story. Indeed beyond the actual concept it doesn't seem to have much to say or do beyond this and I felt this was a weakness as I was waiting for it to be cleverer than it actually was.

As director Mermell has done a good job of recreating the feel of a silent film but in regards substance he could have done a lot better and aimed for more. The two actors are OK (although the neck tattoo on Maples rather flies against her professional character) and they ham it as required but don't have anything to draw you into their characters or create any emotional involvement. A curio short then that is interesting for its style but disappointing for its substance.
