Another Reiniger Masterpiece
boblipton13 October 2013
I am almost always taken with Lotte Reiniger's silhouette animations. Her black, elaborately articulated figures have a grace and delicacy that lend an astonishing intimacy to her work that has, alas, vanished from films since color became standard. Her version of "Thumbelina" is as good as any of her works.

Reiniger's work here is abetted by an original score by Freddie Phillips. It is a modernist chamber orchestra, full of atonality for the stressful parts of the story.

As for the story itself, it's Thumbelina, one of the standard stories in any sizable collection of fairy tales. Enjoy this take on it.
