Thank god they made this.
GiraffeDoor21 September 2023
I recently completed a nostalgia watch of this. In fact, I did one ten years ago too. Maybe I'll revisit this show every 10 years.

Except it was with this watch that I have now seen every episode. How about that?

While the various shows from my preteen years will always be special to me, admittedly some just become fond memories while others stand the test of time and I can watch them all again.

I respect the premise: there are already so many shows about kids and of course how school dominates their lives. So let's move away from the cliché school storylines and just set it during the weekend.

No matter what the conflicts are, each episode has the inviting warmth of the special time after Friday afternoon and before Monday morning. They use scene cards to make sure you don't forget with the cute approach of having one small thing in the scene appear before the rest follows.

It's a formula, but it leaves so much space for inventiveness with stories that begin and resolve within the space of 60 hours so there's always something digestible about an episode of the Weekenders.

The title sequence will just get under your skin and that goofy dancing...I almost feel sorry for them but it's hard not to be charmed by this vision of pre-teen friendship with 4 individual who, while so different, just have fun together.

They routinely break the fourth wall and it's nice to be in on the fun. Tino usually hosts but the others do it as well. Often using surreal gimmicks like the glasses that help you see the world how a cool kid does and the "horizontal gravity syndrome" being apparently a literal thing.

And yes, it's actually pretty funny. There are some episodes that are somewhat excruciating but you can always skip those.

They are not subtle about the life lesson that can be learnt each episode. Often it is explained in candid terms by Tino's Mom. I don't dislike her as a person or a character but she seems like something of a Mary-Sue. I think the running gag of her bizarre cooking was meant to balance that.

But either way, I invite you to give this delightful show of youthful fun and almost-care-free friendship a chance.

The voice actors do a top notch job, especially Soucie as Tish where the intellectualism is spiced up with the occasional dash of Pubert Farnsworth.

And Lor...How did I only come to appreciate in adulthood just how adorable she is?

The Best Cartoon Series Disney Ever Released
Cynicalik7 July 2005
The Weekenders is pretty much about 4 best friends living for the weekend. Doug Langdale is a genius for creating this great cartoon for Disney. It is simply the best Disney cartoon series has came out with in a long time. It's a shame that Disney discontinued it late in 2001. They didn't even have a chance to make merchandise for this show.

At first, I thought this was an awful cartoon when I saw it in 2000. I was about 15 or 16 at the time and I just thought it was really lame. A couple of years later, I watched it again. I didn't know it at the time, but ABC was going to pull the show off their lineup of shows. I would of never seen this show again if I never got satellite. I did get satellite and I found the channel it was on.

This is probably the most realistic cartoon of all time, in my opinion. The episodes deal with some things that kids can relate to. Even though I wasn't really a kid after I watched it, I thought it was a funny cartoon. I sort of related to some of the things that were on the episodes when I was a kid.

Well, it's really too bad that this cartoon didn't make it that far. They never even made that much off this cartoon. Oh well, I guess kids these days want to watch stupid mindless cartoons like Yu-Gi-Oh. I remember it beat Pokemon in the ratings at one point. Anyway, this cartoon is possibly the best cartoon of all time. For those who want to compare this to Recess, you can't really compare them together. Yes, there may be some similarities, but the Weekenders is the better cartoon.

Sophisticated,Funny,and Original!
the_moody_youngest30 August 2006
Top 5 reasons why I like it

5.It is totally original. 4.It has sarcastic, funny, and real humor. 3.It is realistic. 2.It has great characters. 1.The only cartoon where they don't where the same clothes everyday! I love this show for all those reasons and many more. It is one of the best shows on TV because it is definitely realistic and it is actually funny unlike a lot of other comedy shows. Unfunny shows like Unfabulous, and Lloyd in Space. This one is actually funny and not clichéd at all.

Another reason why I love this show is of course because of the characters! Tino Tonitini is the leader(basically of the group) he sarcastic but has a very good heart. His mom always gets him to confess his problems after trying to feed him another one of her gross dinners. Carver Descartes is the shoe loving one of the group who will do anything to be popular. He has a head shaped like a pineapple and can be a little bit of a hypochondriac sometimes. Lor McQuarrie is the tomboy of the group. She loves basketball, pizza, skateboarding, and lives in a house of 15 brothers and a dad.She is quite a ditz and could care less about school. And finally, Tish is the smart one who's family comes from an unknown place they refer to as old country. Tish loves Shakespeare and all the artsy stuff Tino, Carver, and Lor hate!

Four kids enjoy the weekend together
atomius14 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This is a show featuring the weekend lives of Carver, Lor, Tino and Tish, four kids who are friends. At school they apparently aren't considered cool enough, but i reckon they are hardly uncool considering the amount of fun they have.

The plots vary from creative projects to a change in a local place and most involve a scene at the pizza place. The kids have a lot of fun and generally come out of their 'adventures' for the better. This is a good show, the humors good, the animation style is nice and not too overdone, and the characters are good. 9 stars.

This was certainly canceled too early in my opinion, and is one of the better cartoons of the early 2000s. Definitely one of Disney's better modern works.

one of the best Disney shows ever
Floated23 November 2008
Disneys the Weekenders is definitely one of the best disneys shows of alltime, its very fun and amusing to watch. Im a fan of Disney and their animated shows and this is one of their best. Its one of my favorites.

This show is very unique and not like other Disney shows. In the weekenders, the kids actually change their clothes unlike other shows where there pretty much never do that. And this show has funny moments and is just interesting to watch. Weekenders is much better than Recess. In Recess, the characters are annoying but in Weekenders, there not annoying and realistic. Tish and Carver can be annoying at sometimes but other than that this show is sick.

One of the best cartoons of all time
c-computerkid12 August 2014
About a year ago, I vaguely remembered a Disney cartoon called "The Weekenders" from around 2000/2001, and I decided to do a little research on it. I'm so glad I did! "The Weekenders" chronicles the weekends of four average kids: Tino (Jason Marsden), Carver (Phil LaMarr), Lor (Grey DeLisle), and Tish (Kath Soucie). On paper, it does sound like a rather dull show. But what sets this show apart is its attention to the details.

Many cartoons base their humor on slapstick rather than clever writing. The quality of the "The Weekenders" writing, however, is such that you could actually imagine it being a live-action sitcom. Though it is supposedly a "kids' show," many jokes will fly over kids' heads. There are also some lines that are simply hilarious and unexpected.

Stellar voice acting adds to the attractiveness of "The Weekenders." Jason Marsden, famous for playing minor and semi-regular roles in sitcoms, voices the neurotic Tino. Phil LaMarr (the voice of Samurai Jack and Wilt from Foster's) plays fashion-obsessed Carver. Ubiquitous voice actress Grey DeLisle portrays Lor, the "jock," and Kath Soucie rounds out the bunch as the "brain," Tish. Each of the characters is very realistic and you can see yourself and others in them, much like Charles Schulz's "Peanuts." "The Weekenders" also employs unique techniques for an animated series. Often, the characters make asides to the audience (the screen fades to gray while only that character speaks). Also, running gags such as the disastrous off-screen exploits of Chloe Montez reward fans who watched the show from the beginning. Finally, like "As Told by Ginger" the characters actually change clothes when the days change in the show.

Overall, consistently witty writing, strong voice acting, and unique techniques make "The Weekenders" very fun to watch. It's truly a shame this show didn't have a long run like some other animated series; it certainly had the workings to do so.

Worst program next to CatDog
tommypezmaster26 June 2007
Everyonce in a while, 4kids brings new shows to it's company. For the past few years, they brought pure gold like Kirby: Right Back at Ya! or Mew Mew Power. But other nextworks has been off. CatDog is one of the examples.

It's hard to write a negative comment without bashing the show, but in truth, Weekenders is pure garbage. It revolves around A group who with an over active Brain. The catch though is anything he thinks up comes bad. It may sound good on paper, but after watching it, you'll realize how far from good this show is.

The Pizza Guy is an extremely dumb character. He's very 1-dimensional, there's really not much to him. He's hyper-active, end of story. Though many feel all the character are a rip off of the South Park, I think just the contrary. Mechazawa from cromartie High-School is an interesting character, and he's able to make me laugh. Tino fail to do either of the two.

The cast for the show isn't any better. Like Tino's Mom they suffer from lack of character. They only stick to one characteristic and thats it. The only redeeming quality is the fact that the show can cause you to smirk. Whether it's that the scene may actually be funny, or you may just smirk because how stupid it is.

Thje Weekenders is a very crappy show from Disney. Though it does seem to love some fans, it should really be left to the kids.

Wonderful Show!
purdys_997 November 2000
I absolutely love the show. What makes is so great is that it isn't as stereotyping as 'Recess' and it teaches good morals which kids and teenagers can relate to.

I cannot name one bad thing about this show. The animation is great, the plot line is good, and the voice overs are terrific!Special attention goes out to Jason Marsden and Phil Lamarr for their excellent performances of 'Tino' and 'Carver'.

Ready for the weekend
jonasrox13 June 2023
Amazing show. I loved this show growing up and I still do now it's still holds up. Tino is funny one of my favorites especially his fear of everything. Lor is my second fav sporty but sonetimes out there with not a thought in mind. Carver is all about shoes and fashion and tish is the brainy one. All these kids are likable and smart and they don't dumb them down like a lot if cartoons. Jason marsden and Phil lamarr who also voice on static shock are the two main voices here as well. They hope to get the perfect weekend. Like everyone else. It's like recess series but the opposite being the weekend not at school.

The best
ThunderKing620 January 2019
The best Cartoon show ever.

The continuous gags, the sarcasm, stories are very mature and makes this show such a gem.

The characters are relatable, imperfect yet very well likable. The animation is perfect and colorful

They spend their days from Friday to Sunday sometime Monday because everything that happens, happens during the weekend.

They don't and won't make shows like this anymore.

The buddies you never had but wish you had. I love this show!
Kilokahn30 April 2001
For a kid's cartoon this is a total spin. It is not a half-hour of slapstick and spit jokes, instead it is a group of friends who live for the weekend. This has replaced the first episode of Pokemon (8:30AM slot) for me (well, the first episode of Pokemon is always a rerun anyways).

I am 22 years old and looking back at my youth I can see everything I missed by growing up. If I had a group of friends like Lor, Carver, Tish and Tino I would of been the luckiest kid on earth.

They eat Chili-Cheese fries, go to museums and play video games. What else to say? It teaches values and has fun with it. I love this show and I think it deserves a 10/10 for the effort. I pray for syndication!

If you haven't seen the show yet, take the chance and actually watch it. Don't watch it because I said so, watch it because it is youth at its best. Maybe you just have to be a 'grown-up' to truely appreciate it?

unlike other cartoons, These characters actually change clothes regularly!
H-A-LO13 January 2001
Wow, I love this cartoon. OK, so maybe it's not working up to its fullest potential, or getting the credit it deserves, but I must say it is a very well done new series. The humor is very realistic, sarcastic and easy to understand. There are a lot of jokes that blow right over the heads of small children, and the older kids/ adults watching can understand and laugh. All in all, my only complaint is that I don't feel like getting up anymore on Saturdays to watch TV...a sign that I am (unfortunately) growing up...

"The Weekenders" changed my life...
mikec-196 September 2002
I'm so happy to have discovered such a delightful little show. The characters are all very likeable (especially Tish!!), the scenario's are easy to follow, and it's very original. More shows should take hints from this one on how to be great programming. I hope to see more from this series, maybe a revival, or a movie (whether it's straight-to-video or nationwide at a theater). Seek this series on tv, it's certainly worth it.

Later Days
Loz827 September 2001
It has been amusing reading people comments on this show. I found them to be quite varied and critical, which i honestly didn't expect.

I love this show. However, i am slightly biased, as the only reason i watched it is because of Jason Marsden a.k.a Tino Tonitini. Now that i have watched it i can say that i would watch it even without Jason, without lying. Sometimes it can be a bit sickly sweet, but i think this is balanced out beautifully by the jokes and the characters' undesirable traits. Yes, Tino, Carver, Tish and Lor do seem to be too smart alec(y) and knowledgeable to be 12, yet my 11 yr old brother loves the show, and often laughs at jokes that i would never have thought he'd get. I think sometimes us older people don't remember what it's like to be a kid, and what we found amusing. It's okay to look back and say something is trite and conceited. But as a kid... do you really care? Who were the audiences of 'Full House' do you think? I believe "The Weekenders" is good for kids because it does have all those 'moral' little stories. P.S...i love Tino's ending word at the end of each episode. It's often where his funniest jokes are. And also... can IMDb change "Tino Tontini" to "Tino Tonitini" please???

A Good Show
Ginger873 August 2004
"The Weekenders" is a very good show. I first started watching it when it began back on Disney's One Saturday Morning. It's funny, realistic, and I also like the fact that the main characters change their close each day. The characters are: Tino the narrator, Lor the tomboy, Carver the athlete, and Tish the genius/artistic one. My favorite characters are Tino and Lor. My other favorite characters are: Lor's brothers, the really tall girl (I can't remember her name), and Tino's mom (she gives good advice).

My favorite episode is Home@work (that was hysterical when Tish and Carver were choosing "temporary friends"). Weekenders is a really good show(10/10 stars) and I still watch on Toon Disney.

Really fun...
luvdaydream31 July 2003
This is a great Disney Cartoon that follows the tale of four pre-teen friends during the weekend:

Tino - The protagonist who pulls some "Malcolm In The Middle" style narrartion and confides in his mom about troubles in paradise.

Carver - The other male in the group, a black boy with tons of style and somewhat of a big head (egotistical I mean).

Lor - The tomboy who loves to be the boss but can get totally giddy at times, and has about 10 brothers.

Tish - The german import genius girl who is obsessed with taking notes and learning, yet isn't always the smartest as she lives in a dreamworld of some sort.

While the show isn't necessairly groundbreaking, the acting is remarkable, the characters are lovable, and the plot lines are downright entertaining.

A 13-year-old's opinion: Good and Fun!
gaiusknight18 May 2005
This is, in my opinion, the best cartoon show on the air today. As you watch the show you really feel for the characters, all of which are creative and fun. Watching their antics is a real pleasure. All of the characters are different and have unique personalities. Tino, Tish, Carver, and Lor are average kids who deal with common issues such as popularity and support for other friends' interests. The plots are relative to real kids and their situations. This is especially true with the show's view on "the cool kids". Though all the other kids desperately want to be among them, the cool kids really aren't that cool. This moral, along with others, makes the show morally educational while remaining fun and refraining from being preachy. I think this makes it superior to its main competitor Recess, whose moral lessons are mediocre at best.

The Best Cartoon Ever
Glozone27 July 2003
When I first saw this show on One Saturday Morning, I thought it was just another Recess or Pepper Ann, the episodes were funny, but over-all not that exciting. Yet as I began to watch it on Disney Channel recently I realized how great the show is. The voice-acting, (Jason Marsden and Phil LaMarr as Tino and Carver in particular) is fantastic and the characters (with the possible exception of Tish) are extremely three-dimensional. The characters are more mature than the characters in most Disney cartoons, and the show is extremely funny. You can all kinds of humor with Tino's bitter sarcasm, Carver's over-the-top melodrama, Lor's random idiocy and Tish's ridiculously large vocabularly. They missed the mark by making Tish the quintessential "smart one" but other than that no one had a blatant stereotype. Tino's paranoid wise-ass is the show-stealer and makes quite a good main character, and the great character of "Tino's Mom" dares to make a non-corny parent in a cartoon (a huge rarity.) All in all, this is better than most sitcoms on TV, which is more than I could say for most cartoons (especially Disney ones.)

Treats adults as real people.
SeanB427 August 2001
My wife and I watch the Weekenders along with Recess every weekend. What I like best about the Weekenders, and what seems to be unique among both cartoons and juvenile sitcoms, is that the parents aren't treated as if they are stupid and horribly out of touch. Tino's mother is shown to be an intelligent person, and understanding of her son's predicaments. She is never without words of wisdom and never ceases to amaze her son with her tidbits of knowledge. We don't see some of the other parents very often, but even Tish's immigrant parents are treated with warmth. this unusual treatment makes the show stand above most of the others in my opinion.

Disney scores again!
dootuss13 February 2002
Disney always had a reputation for making some bad T.V. shows over the years. The sketches on One Saturday Morning", "Pepper Ann", "Disney's Doug", and "Lloyd in space" are ones that I truly dislike. But I love Recess, and I also like "The Weekenders". This show is about these kids who thrive for the weekends, which is pretty cool. This show is inventive, and funny, and I think it's a fresh breath of air. So watch it!!

As Tino would say "Later Days!"

One of the better cartoons set in the so-called real world.
Victor Field23 July 2001
Recently, TV cartoons have been trying to get more realistic grounding, an approach I'm not too happy with. Trying to take a more mature approach to action-adventure is one thing, but animation should try to present things not regularly seen in real life; they should take advantage of their status as cartoons (which is one of the reasons why "King of the Hill" has never done anything for me; unlike the hilarious and much underrated "Family Guy," it would lose nothing by being made in live-action).

"The Weekenders," like fellow Disney cartoon "Pepper Ann," displays the weaknesses and strengths of this approach. Set in a beachside city and following the weekend exploits of four friends (Tino our "host," Carver, Lor and Tish), it's a long way from Hanna-Barbera's 1970s efforts but also tends to bring on its morals for that episode's stories (with a few exceptions like the show where Tino's mum meets a new man, most instalments contain two adventures) with the mentality of the worst kind of sickly family show, though admittedly without the sledgehammer effect of Filmation's shows. Tino's habit of doing an equivalent of Jerry Springer's Final Thought at the end of each story is also about as welcome and as necessary as an enema with an icepick, and the show also flirts with stereotyping even when it tries not to, such as with the running gag about the museum having foods of all nations.

But (and here come the strengths) the show's clear good intentions ultimately don't get in the way of a desire to entertain; the four main characters are a lot more likeable than many of their liveaction counterparts (although the episode where they contrasted their real lives with the ones on a "Dawson's Creek"-type show seemed a bit self-important, Lor and company really are better value than Pacey et al), and the scripts are effective more often than not, which is to be expected given the involvement of "Earthworm Jim"'s Doug Langdale; extra stars for the other running gag about the pizza parlour that changes its theme each episode, and for a terrific theme song by Roger Neill and Wayne Brady.

And any cartoon where Jennifer Love Hewitt makes a guest appearance is fine by me (it's not often someone does something like this on a cartoon that isn't "The Simpsons").

Later days!

definitely the best Disney cartoon there is!!
supermolo16 February 2006
I remember watching Weekenders on Saturday mornings when I younger, and I loved it. I'm 15 now and if anything I appreciate it more. its defiantly the best Disney cartoon there is, because its based for pre-teens whilst appealing to those younger and older. The plots and scripts are brilliant, they have morals but don't bore you and have brilliant comic timing and references, and it has a fantastic theme tune!! I love the characters Cos although they're designed around stereotypical ideas of 12 year olds, they also have their own original personalities.

The narrator, Tino is the main character, the down-to-earth and easy-going one that keeps the group together (with the help of his mum, who's possibly the coolest mum ever, if a weird cook) and yet tends to say and do kooky things. He can be a bit sensitive (and likes lame comic books), but he stays true to himself which what makes him so cool. That and his brilliant sarcasm. He has sharp comedy and always says the right things for the situation. He's hilarious, defiantly the funniest character.

Lor is the typical tomboy; sporty, not that smart, has loads of brothers, doesn't 'do' girlie. But she's probably my favourite character Cos she really breaks the cliché with her cute randomness and insecurity, the fact that she mucks things up but isn't completely clueless. Well, maybe just a little.

Carver is the 'cool' one. He has a small attention span when it isn't about himself, fashion, or food. But at the end of the day he is a nice guy and always sticks with his mates. He's the middle child, he loves 'Teen Canon' (hit teenage TV drama), '3 Nitwits' movies and shoes. He has a big thing about shoes. Yeah, see he's weird really.

And finally we have Tish. She's probably the most stereotypical, being the 'smart' one. She loves Shakespeare and does math equations in her head. She's an artist, a vegetarian and, like Tino, a single child . Her parents are from... somewhere in Europe and speak very bad English and fill their house and yard with weird ornaments. But really Tish is quite normal, and loves arcade games and pizza and generally having fun with her friends. Even if she does wear clogs.

I love Weekenders and everything its represents; youth, friendship, having fun, living for the weekend. I'd love to be like them. Living in sunny California by the beach with their mall and their arcade centre (the gamiest place on earth!) and their pizza place where the theme changes every week. I also like that they wear different outfits, rather than wearing the same clothes every episode. It just makes it seem so much more realistic, more believable. I wish they'd bring weekenders back to Saturday morning British TV, we can only watch it on Disney channel, and not a lot of people have it, especially people my age. I love Weekenders, its totally underrated. Later days!
