Unusual little picture
magicshadows-9009811 September 2015
Right from the opening minutes the viewer realizes he's watching an odd motion picture. A man (Lyndon Brook) is an army deserter who has been living in squalor. A bit of good luck finds his way and he lands a good job. He returns home to celebrate with his girlfriend (Jane Hylton), who promptly tells him that she gave up their child for adoption. He strangles her in a fit of rage and slinks off to start a new life.

Five years later, Brook is a successful businessman and he's engaged to a lovely woman (Jill Browne). His successful life unravels very quickly after Browne's apartment is robbed and the detective sent to investigate also worked on the murder five years before. The actors give fine performances, the tale is well written, the film has a nice pace. A well made British crime drama from the late 1950's.

The first Sidney Hayers try...
searchanddestroy-115 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Yes folks, that's the first movie directed by Sydney Hayers, one of the greatest UK B crime movie director, who made pretty good work for TV industry many years later, in famous TV shows such as THE AVENGERS.

This little feature is not really a crime film, but a fairly interesting drama, with little noir lines in it.

A young man buys a toy for his kid but when he comes home, his wife tells him that the boy - an adopted child - has been sold for some dol. The couple fights and our lead accidentally kills his wife before escaping.

Later, he meets another gal, who of course ignores all of his past - except that he has a child of his own. He gives her the toy he first bought for his boy and, one night, gets in the girl's apartment to pick the toy back. A few minutes later, a burglar robs the same apartment and gets away. The police force is on this burglar's tail,a burglar who has already killed some one in Brighton. With a knife. The SY investigator tells our lead every thing about this very affair, as far as the girl's apartment has been robbed by the same man, with the same MO. But during the relation between the cop and the young father, the inspector feels something unusual about the young man. They talk about adopted children, like the one a murdered woman had sold some years earlier, the young man's ex wife...

The inspector gets what actually happened and tricks the lead, telling him a phony name of the murdered man in Brighton. And the young murderer falls in the trap.

A good film which deserves to be discovered. A must see, really.
