You thought you were okay sitting on the toilet until you read Dreamcatcher. You’d happily walk past a storm drain until you read It. You’d go into a creepy boutique shop before checking Needful Things out of the library. You didn’t even mind checking into Room 217 at a hotel until you read The Shining. More than perhaps any other horror novelist, Stephen King has unnerved our collective imagination with twisted creations that stalk our everyday lives. Demonic cars, rabid dogs, alien domes, possessed caretakers, crazed fans… there’s a Stephen King monster for every day of the year, plus one extra on leap years.
With a back catalogue reaching all the way from the 1970s to now, if you stacked every novel Stephen King had ever published in a teetering pile, it would almost certainly topple over and crush you to death.

Buckle up, horror fiends and cinephiles, for a ride through the wackiest, wonkiest, and downright weirdest territories of the Stephen King cinematic universe. If you thought haunted hotels and telekinetic teenagers were the peak of King’s oddities, prepare to have your minds delightfully boggled. We’re venturing into a realm where machines develop murderous intentions and laundry presses harbor demonic spirits. Yes, you read that right.
Without further ado, let’s dive into the “Kooky King: 6 of the Weirdest Stephen King Film Adaptations,” ranked by their sheer ability to make you say, “What the King?”
New Line Cinema 6. The Lawnmower Man (1992)
Kicking things off with The Lawnmower Man, a film so out there, Stephen King wanted his name off the marquee. Imagine virtual reality mixed with a splash of mad scientist vibes courtesy of Pierce Brosnan, leading to a cybernetic spree that’s more trippy than terrifying. This flick...

Cinematic adaptations have not always been kind to the work of Stephen King, not least, I suspect, because his books are frequently lengthy, packed with character and plot and slip between time periods with ease. William Goldman, who later had less success adapting Hearts In Atlantis and Dreamcatcher, capitalises on the claustrophobia of King's taut psychological horror in Rob Reiner's take on the tale of a writer (James Caan) who has a car crash and his "number one fan" (Kathy Bates), who takes him in at the same time as taking less than kindly to his decision to kill off her favourite character. Applying physical violence with restraint - although it hits home when it counts - this is all about the psychological sparring between the two, with Bates getting all the best lines, and winning an Oscar for her trouble. The subtext,...

Along with The Mist and Dreamcatcher, Cycle of the Werewolf was one of my first introductions to Stephen King, so the Master of Horror's powerfully poignant prose in that novella—combined with the legendary Bernie Wrightson's amazing illustrations—will forever hold a special place in my horror-loving heart, and so too does its film adaptation: Dan Attias' Silver Bullet (which really captures the blood-soaked slice of small-town life in Tarker's Mills).
It's especially thrilling, then, that Scream Factory will be unleashing their Collector's Edition of Silver Bullet on 4K Uhd and Blu-ray just in time for the holiday season, and we have a look at the full list of bonus features fans can look forward to, including a new audio commentary with Eric Vespe and Scott Wampler of The Kingcast!

Exclusive: Anonymous Content, Red Bull Studios and Rise Films have partnered to produce new documentary feature The Balloonists following Swiss explorer Bertrand Piccard and English balloonist Brian Jones. BAFTA and Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker John Dower has come aboard to direct the project and Anonymous Content’s AC Independent will oversee sales.
The Balloonists follows the unlikely duo of Swiss explorer Piccard and British flying instructor Jones who, in 1999, took on the world’s leading aeronauts and ultra-rich adventurers in a race to become the first people to fly nonstop around the world in a hot air balloon. Many in the aviation community believed this to be an impossible feat, after years of failed attempts by balloonists from across the globe. More than most racing sports, ballooning is subject to the capricious whims of nature. An aeronaut must learn to accept the unexpected and respect their position in the hierarchy of the natural world,...

‘Glamorous’ Trailer: Kim Cattrall Gets Her ‘Devil Wears Prada’ Moment in Netflix Queer Comedy Series
Netflix’s upcoming series “Glamorous” is like “The Devil Wears Prada” if Meryl Streep were replaced by “Sex and the City’s” Kim Cattrall and instead of Anne Hathaway, she hired drag queens and non-binary actor Miss Benny to work for her. The 10-episode LGBTQ comedy series premieres June 22 on the streamer.
“Glamorous” follows baby-faced new hire Marco Mejia (Miss Benny), a young, queer man who lands a job for the legendary CEO Madolyn Addison (Cattrall). Madolyn’s makeup line, Glamorous Cosmetics, is plummeting. Suspecting her business is being sabotaged by someone on the inside, she hires Marco to sleuth around.
“She wants him to be her eyes and ears, to make friends — and find out what’s going on behind her back, to discover what they’re hiding and what they’re stealing. In exchange, she’ll teach Marco everything she knows – but she warns him, ‘This business isn’t all glitter and glamour,...

When the idea for this feature was first proposed, the angle was “Stephen King stories set at Christmas.” Much to my surprise, however, and despite our best efforts, we were not able to find a story by the master that was set specifically during the holidays or that pertained to them in some meaningful way. Given the breadth of King’s prose, this absence is surprising. It also begged a new question: What, then, are his best stories set in winter? It’s perhaps telling how quickly the choices multiplied. More than a few of King’s best-known tales take place during the coldest part of the year, and a few lesser-known tales benefit greatly from having the same backdrop.
We’re not parsing whether they’re short stories, novels, TV productions, or movies—we’ll discuss the story in whatever medium (or media) it’s appeared in—and we’ve left out a couple,...

In this edition of The Silver Lining, we’ll be tackling Mick Garris and Stephen King’s unfairly maligned Sleepwalkers!
For every successful Stephen King adaptation, there are usually a handful of lesser projects lurking in its shadow. From Dreamcatcher to Lawnmower Man, the King of Horror actually has quite a few box-office bombs under his belt, with some fans justifying this by claiming that adaptations miss out on crucial inner monologues and emotional subtext. However, there is one Stephen King project that suggests that there might be more to the middling reception of some of these movies than the adaptational process.
Naturally, I’m referring to Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers, the one and only time that Stephen King wrote a story specifically for the big screen. Back in the early 90s, King’s tales were already sizzling hot properties at movie studios, so Columbia Pictures immediately accepted King’s offer...

The Radleys are an ordinary family, or at least that’s what the neighbours think, no one would suspect that behind all of this, the Radleys hold a dark secret…they are vampires. Horror movies come and go, and a lot of them tend to be filed away, but there are some that might be remembered by some folks since they deliver something that might be considered to be entertaining. Dreamcatcher is one of those movies that a lot of people might feel is worth the attention it’s been given, but there is plenty to be said about it that might not be as complimentary as people might like. For one, the movie is a little predictable once a person figures out how the formula is being used and what is bound to

On Sept. 8, 2017, New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Pictures released It: Chapter One, the first of two movies based on the classic 1986 novel by Stephen King and a film destined to go down in cinema history as the highest grossing horror movie of all time.
Opening to a record-shattering 124 million and eventually earning 701 million worldwide (against a measly budget of 40 million or so), It: Chapter One was also a fantastic movie. It captured both the unimaginable terror of the entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown (helped by a genuinely unnerving performance by Bill Skarsgard) and the emotional, coming-of-age story of the seven kids known as the Losers Club, who bond together to battle the malignancy under their town.
It: Chapter One also proved that a mainstream, high-quality, studio-backed picture could still be made from King’s work, after a nearly 20-year period in which many adaptations either did moderately well...

Since the release of Stephen King's novel "Carrie" in 1974, the author has been one of the most famous American horror writers of all time. In his long career, he has created homicidal cars, psychotic clowns, and obsessive fans. King's macabre stories always keep avid readers entertained, and his characters and plots are often adapted into films and television shows.
Since Brian De Palma adapted "Carrie" in 1976, which has become a horror classic, King's novels have inspired dozens of films, miniseries, and TV shows. King's novels are largely critical successes, but the adaptations based on his fiction are very hit and miss. "Carrie," "It," and "The Shining" top the list of horror classics, while films like "Dreamcatcher," "Dark Tower," and "Thinner" were major flops.
This shaky relationship with Hollywood and its audience might shake the foundation of some author's confidence, but King doesn't allow it to derail his writing. However,...

As a writer, Lawrence Kasdan has crafted stories that would be impossible to tell without the groundbreaking visual effects house Industrial Light & Magic. Kasdan, who co-wrote “The Empire Strikes Back” (and several other “Star Wars” projects), “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Dreamcatcher” (which he also directed), has always been in close proximity to Ilm. But his latest project, a six-part documentary series called “Light & Magic,” goes deep into the history and pedigree of the company, which was created to work on the first “Star Wars” and has transformed the industry, again and again.
In 2019 Kasdan and his wife Meg made a short documentary called “Last Week at Ed’s,” which chronicled the closure of a beloved West Hollywood diner. (The Kasdans frequented it.) “In the process of making that documentary, I fell in love with docs,” Kasdan said. “I love the process. I love not knowing what the story was at the beginning.

The Oscar and Emmy-winning company also saw its documentary, All That Breathes, from Shaunak Sen, sell to HBO Documentary films earlier this week before it was shown in the Cannes Special Screening section last night. “No bounce, no play…” Few Stephen King novels have as lousy a reputation as Dreamcatcher. It was the first fiction novel he released following his near-fatal 1999 accident, and the author famously wrote it while blown out of his mind on painkillers. And, yeah, it’s a weird book. There’s telepathic aliens, viral mold, psychotic government […]

Lawrence Kasdan's 2003 film "Dreamcatcher," based on the novel by Stephen King, is perhaps the craziest and dumbest things in the careers of either of them. To borrow a phrase Roger Ebert used to describe "Death to Smoochy," it's the kind of bad film that can only happen when really talented people gather together. "Dreamcatcher" is a bizarro hodgepodge of King's most commonly visited ideas, but filtered through a haze of half-remembered sci-fi movies from the 1950s and no small amount of high-end chemical tranquilizers.
In brief: "Dreamcatcher" is about four adult male friends who take a yearly pilgrimage to a remote cabin in the woods to honor their friend...

It should feel abrupt, but while Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 5 marks the first of two midseason breaks, it also closes off a solid introductory arc for its characters, world, and conflicts.
After the cliffhanger ending of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 4, things looked bleak for our heroes. And Gwyn.
Obviously, Gwyn will ultimately band together with our crew, but as of the start of the back half of this murder planet adventure, she still sees and thinks of herself as separate from the others.
There's a thing some reviewers call "The Three Episode Test" for new shows. The idea is that a show with any level of world-building needs at least three episodes to set up its premise, introduce its characters, and get the action moving.
I know this is technically Episode 5 of Prodigy, but given the fact it premiered with no actual delineation between Star Trek: Prodigy...

This Star Trek article contains some spoilers for Prodigy episode 3, “Dreamcatcher.”
Spores are a big deal in Star Trek. This may sound like a retroactive canon thing, given that the propulsion system of the USS Discovery basically runs on mushrooms, but, the truth is, spores also gave Star Trek: The Original Series one of its most pivotal and important episodes: “This Side of Paradise.” Prior to Prodigy‘s release, we were told that the kid-geared series would be drawing inspiration from all corners of Trek universe and, in a kind of strange tribute to both the spores of Discovery and the spores of Tos, the new kids’ animated series Star Trek: Prodigy now also has its own spore-centric arc. Here’s what’s going on in the episode “Dreamcatcher,” and how the whole premise scans as a love letter to the Treks that came before.

That said, the specialty box office space might be hearing some more coin drop into its piggy bank in the forthcoming months. It’s been quite a journey, but we’ll get there slowly yet surely.

"All they wanted... was a killer night out." Oh what a tagline. Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Dreamcatcher, not to be confused with the other horror film also titled Dreamcatcher from 2003. This new horror film centers on two estranged sisters who, along with their friends, become entrenched in a 48 hour whirlwind of violence & chaos after a traumatic experience at an underground dance music festival. Sounds intense. The film's cast includes Niki Koss, Zachary Gordon, Travis Burns, Blaine Kern III, Olivia Sui, Emrhys Cooper, Elizabeth Posey, Nazanin Mandi, Adrienne Wilkinson, and Lou Ferrigno Jr. This looks absolutely ridiculous, a strange rip-off of Scream using the Phantom of the Paradise mask set at a rave. To show in March, this title takes place at an underground music festival. Here, the drug-fueled party turns into a scene of violence as the event spirals out of control. As well, Dreamcatcher stars: Niki Koss (My Stepdaughter), Zachary Gordon (Dead of Summer), Travis Burns (Sunrise in Heaven), Blaine Kern III and several others. The film's early artwork and a still are available now. Johnston's debut also mentions the title is based on a DJ. Dylan (Burns) is set to hit the world stage, when a disaster hits during his set. It feels like you can barely turn around these days without bumping into an adaptation of a Stephen King story, with the prolific author’s back catalogue having proven to be incredibly fertile ground for film and television projects over the last four decades. There are currently fourteen movies and six shows in development based on his novels and short stories, with The Outsider and The Stand both debuting this year.
Given the sheer volume of page-to-screen works based on the 73 year-old’s output, then, it isn’t surprising that the quality has varied wildly from undisputed classics like The Shining, The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile to the tedious Dreamcatcher and The Dark Tower, with The Stand currently receiving tepid reviews after premiering on CBS a couple of weeks ago.

As one of the most heavily adapted authors on the planet, it isn’t surprising that the quality of the many movies and TV shows based on the works of Stephen King have been wildly inconsistent over the decades. For every Carrie, The Shawshank Redemption, Stand by Me or The Shining there’s a Dreamcatcher, The Dark Tower or Bag of Bones.
For the most part, King’s novels and short stories have fared much better on the small screen, at least when there hasn’t already been a great movie made out of the source material. For instance, a lot of people might not even be aware that The Shining and Carrie were the subjects of TV shows, which is probably for the best. However, the likes of 11.22.63, Mr. Mercedes and The Outsider have all been solid at the very least.

You can’t go anywhere these days without bumping into a Stephen King adaptation, as the prolific author’s work is constantly mined for new movies and TV shows, a trend that’s been going on for over 40 years at this point.
